Report states four powerful ships of the Baltic squadron are roaming the sea in the hands of revolutionists. The sea area surrounding the ships remains tense as authorities monitor movements and seek disruption of naval authority.
Reports from St Petersburg describe a tense naval mutiny crisis with Sveaborg battle outcomes undecided. Credible rumors claim Baltic ships mutinous in the Gulf of Finland and Cronstadt watch, while Viceroyalty and Grand Duke Alexander stay away from fleet command.
A rumor of the surrender of the mutinous Sveaborg force reached Helsingfors via the Sveaborg postmaster. No confirmation is available, and fire damage has crippled fortifications with no recent firing for two hours as mutineers fail to secure provisions.
From Helsingfors dated August 2 reports indicate mutineers have surrendered. Battleships Slava and Czarevitch arrived and bombarded the rebels destroying a central magazine. Commander Toaget and 2,000 loyal infantry surrounded the barricades under heavy fire from revolutionaries.
Reports from Viborg state the Russian torpedo flotilla at Hangon has mutinied imprisoning officers and sailed to aid mutineers at Reval. A general strike was declared in Helsingfors to defend the city from bombardment, while the cruiser Alva arrived and bombarding continues.

Helsingfors August 1 The cannonade at Sveaborg continued after noon as the insurgents powder magazine exploded. The smoke from burning buildings is visible and shrapnel rains into the sea near Lonnan island where a cruiser is stationed. Troops are pouring into Helsingfors.
Detachments of guards occupied the general telegraph office and surrounding buildings in Saint Petersburg just before midnight as authorities fear a major demonstration to sever communications between the capital and the interior.
Night combat rages as mutineers clash with loyal troops around Helsinki and on Nicholas Island. heavy cannonade lights Observation Hill. Sailors disarmed on Skatudden. strikes and disruptions spread through Cronstadt and Viborg lines amid widespread unrest. Heavy bombardment continues at Sveaborg with reports of distracted shore defenses and impending quiescence.
St Petersburg reports great excitement over alleged plans to seize Sveaborg Cronstadt and Sebastopol as bases for a Baltic and Black Sea mutiny. A telegram from Sveaborg claims four warships mutinied. If the Royal squadron joins, regaining Sveaborg becomes unlikely.
St Petersburg Aug. Lo M Hergenstein a former member and a leading figure of the Constitutional Democrats was assassinated at his country house near Terioy Finland. He was shot while walking with his wife and daughter the daughter wounded in the hand. Murderers fled justice. Herzenstein of Jewish descent was wealthy and previously critical of the finance minister drawing broad attention.
The Argentine Central railroad from Silver Plume to Mount McClellan on Kay's Peak was opened for traffic. Engineer Edward J. Wilcox built the line reaching 14,000 feet above sea level, claimed as the highest traction road outside the Andes. The Mount McClellan view touted as the best on the eastern Rockies.
Des Moines August 1 The Republican state convention renominated Governor A B Cummins on the first ballot and completed state officer nominations with few contests. A platform endorsing reciprocity by Blaine and supported by McKinley and Roosevelt was adopted as Cummins solidified delegate support and harmony prevailed.
Lewis Myers, a Santa Fe machinist, was freed on 3000 bond after a Las Vegas arrest on a federal conspiracy warrant and a territorial hearing. He was rearrested by San Miguel county on the same charge and sent back to Las Vegas. Also, J E Jordan faced arrest on a 25 dollar bad check charge in Estancia after cashing a Roswell bank draft.
Berlin Aug 11 Emperor William orders full inquiry into Major Fischer attached to the headquarters in German South Africa who is arrested for accepting bribes from war supply firms. Reports say Fischer received funds for years as loans from the monopoly supplier to colonial forces, totaling about 25000 dollars. his annual salary was 2000 dollars and he faced no prospect of repayment.
Advices report a growing uprising in Kiangsi and Chekiang with tactics echoing the Taiping era. Hainchenenghsien fell to rebels, looted, and a 5009-strong garrison prepared for siege as imperial troops moved in. Magistrate Shem was tortured and killed amid punitive actions. Churches were destroyed and six converts murdered. Large rebel-linked troops are abroad. A separate Madison valley fire at Higbee and Watkins' sawmill caused extensive losses.
The Southern Pacific company met the freight handlers at Oakland yards, granting their wage demands after a strike last week. Workers had walked out then returned to duty once promises to consider their requests were made by the company.
New York August 1 Congressman Sherman chairman of the Republican committee said the appeal to each Republican voter to contribute one dollar has drawn satisfactory response. He noted that if one in ten Republicans sends a dollar the campaign will be funded. He added the rallying cry will be Prosperity and Roosevelt with a defense of the last congress’s record.
A steamer Ningpo collided with a floating mine 120 miles from the Yangtze mouth, amid fears of further mines. The American schooner Agenor was reportedly wrecked near Kobe under suspicious circumstances after a transfer of cargo. Seamen testified pilots threatened crew, while underwriters pursue charges. In Cowes the Spanish queen and king arrived aboard the royal yacht, and in New York the Democratic state committee set Buffalo for the next convention with Hearst favored for governor.
Pittsburg August 1. In Hartje divorce trial newspaper man Fred Long testified that Hartje defense attorney Marron warned of letters in Hartje counsel’s possession. The confrontation followed earlier claims of letter theft from Tom Madine’s trunk. Detectives Staubb and Anderson were arrested and later released on bonds.

A Santa Fe freight locomotive exploded at Manafield six miles east of Pueblo this morning killing Engineer E Holmes and an unknown boy. firemen were injured, reporting by a Garden City special to the Chieftain.
A freak rainstorm hit Louisville on Aug 1 causing wide damage from a cloudburst like downpour. South Louisville and Parkland suffered most as streetcar tracks flooded and cellars filled. Six to seven foot water blocked Seventh and Hill, sparrows perished in flooded gardens.
