Mexican outlaws cross the border and attack in Oklahoma. They shoot Private John Twoney and U S Customs Inspector Wood, killing them as residents report the raid and authorities launch inquiries.
Carranza soldiers and customs guards pursue two of five Mexican bandits who crossed the border and clashed with U S cavalry and Mexican troops. Two Americans killed and one wounded as pursuit continues into the desert south of San Vanado Chihuahua. Fort Bliss reports officer wounded and two bandits still at large. Fort Hancock casualties include Private John Twoney and United States customs inspector Robert Wood.
Senator Walsh urged a constitutional amendment to bar federal judges from elective offices. Considered amendments to the Federal Reserve Act. Debated District of Columbia appropriation. Passed a vocational education bill. Adjourned at 6 30 p m until 10 a m Tuesday. No session, meets Wednesday.
Yesterday's maximum reached 74 degrees and minimum 59 with a 20 degree range. The 6 pm temperature was 70 degrees with a southwest wind and clear skies.
In a late July report from El Paso General Funston says a Carranza captain and eight soldiers assisted American forces near Fort Hancock Texas against Mexican bandits. The clash left four bandits dead and two Americans dead Private John Twoney and Robert Woolf. The bandits fled across the Rio Grande as Carrancistas pursued but no additional U S troops joined the chase.
The Allies refused permission for Red Cross relief through blockade lines to Germany and Austria. A London envoy note says aid must be channeled via hospital units under supervision to ensure supplies are not diverted to military use. Yuma Ariz July 31. One of the worst electrical rainstorms in years hit late today causing thousands of dollars in crop damage to alfalfa and nearby fields. Nearly an inch of rain fell in half an hour as temperatures dropped from 106 to 74. Telegraph lines failed for hours and irrigation system damage was feared.
