Ward speaker pro tem and Ways and Means chair arraigned in police court on a warrant charging him with manslaughter in the death of Edith Presly a proofreader from a criminal operation in April Ward asked for examination and was released on a $5 000 bond with September 6 set for the hearing.
A blaze at the Pittsburg municipal charity complex in Marshalsea, Pa., caused 250000 dollars in damage. The administration building and hospital were destroyed. One man killed by falling walls and two city workers seriously injured. Samuel Means buried under debris. W H Lajken and Senten Thornton in serious condition.
Berlin reports the most successful long distance photograph experiments tonight. Prat Stern from Munich sent images to Berlin using a red wire loaned by the government. Photographs of Emperor William the crown prince and Prof. Stern were received, developed, and will continue next week from Berlin to Munich.
In Metcalfe Arizona a cable drawing an ore car on the Shanton incline broke yesterday afternoon. Five men were in the car. two jumped and two died, two were badly injured. Jesus Looper was hurled 400 feet and died later, Giovanni Nasiello was instantly killed, Jane Canute injured severely and likely to die, Foreman Tom Sidebottom suffered a broken left leg.
Salt Lake City July 31 Chief of Police Sheets resigns amid an indictment for conspiring with swindlers to fleece tourists. He and allies deny the charges as politically motivated and unfounded.
Colon July 21 reports detour and delays as isthmus road sustains severe damage from sinking land around Lion Hill ten miles from Coe jon. A marsh track over the Black Swamp sank near several freight trains. both ends of the isthmus see irregular service with passengers shifted by temporary pathways.
London July 31 Rev. J. Campbell, known for controversial theological views, is invited by the Liberal Party to contest the next election for Cardigan in Parliament. He declines immediate acceptance, citing uncertain feasibility, and speaking at a meeting advocated secular education and land reform as remedies. He argued for prioritizing physical well being of children over religious strife. The clergy figure previously sparked debate by advocating labor concerns and supporting worker issues.
A Denver conference involving Vice President A. D. Parker and union leaders from the switchmen yardmen conductors engineers and firemen discussed a two cent per hour wage increase in a strike of switchmen and yard men. A southbound Monte and Ohio passenger train derailed between Jonesboro and Mil Creek in Illinois. The engine and two cars left the track. Ed ward Willian of Teun.ta was fatally injured, with other passengers severely injured. The engine was overturned and scalding water spilled. several travelers suffered serious damage in the wreck.
New York July 31 began a demand for a twenty five cent day wage increase affecting 17 000 machinists in and around New York City The Inter Union Association of Machinists and the Amalgamated Society of Engineers representing about 30 branches of metal shop trades said the raise is effective from tomorrow and workers will wait a few days for employer response before striking.
