President Coolidge tells the Daughters of the American Revolution that government overreach into private affairs can be avoided if citizens adopt self governing action and high standards of conduct. He urges private action, national unity, and welcoming immigrants while stressing voluntary civic duty.
Denver and New Mexico expect generally fair conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with little temperature change. Arizona also fair, with a warm east portion Tuesday. Local report shows 24 hour ending 6 pm yesterday: high 77, low 62, humidity 68, no precipitation, wind from the southwest, and clear skies.
A 1200 acre wildfire in the Datil forest of New Mexico was reported at the district forest office. The fire, in Lik mountain district about 100 miles southwest of Magdalena, was briefly controlled Saturday but escaped 15 firefighters Sunday, then was contained again Sunday night. If no rain falls widely by May 1, the district fire force will be on duty earlier. Gila and Sitgreaves forests have guards on duty and will increase by May 1 as drought continues. portions of southwest New Mexico have had no rain for 15 months.
Interstate Commerce Commission suspended proposed railroad rate hikes on horses and mules moving into and out of Texas and the southwest. Schedules filed to start April 20 were halted to August 15 for investigation. Current Wichita to El Paso rate 77 cents per hundred pounds would rise to 1.07, and El Paso to Fort Worth from 54 to 1.01.
New York April 20 Associated Press members favored radio broadcasting of nationally and internationally important news. A rising vote recommended the board of directors be allowed to permit restricted broadcasting of outstanding events under safeguards. The resolution will be considered for ratification at tomorrow's annual meeting.
The Phoenix Railway company announced it will abandon its street car system in Phoenix on October 20 1925. M H Sherman president signed the abandonment notice served on the state corporation commission the Phoenix city commission and the Maricopa county board of supervisors. Officials cited years of losses rising competition and higher electric power costs as reasons for ceasing operations and said a bus line will take over the same routes once permits are issued. A commission hearing will review the abandonment. officials noted the bus line must operate immediately after street cars stop on the same lines.
Albert H. Denton as receiver of City National Bank of El Paso received 18,093.78 dollars for a promissory note in an order by Judge Orie L. Phillips. He also obtained a first lien on personal property including cattle and ranch holdings and authority to convert the property to cash via private or public sale. Attorney E. L. Medler was awarded 800 dollars.
Paris April 20 The new French cabinet led by Painleve will present its ministerial declaration to parliament tomorrow. Briand as foreign minister and Calllaux head of finance shape the government. The declaration covers security and church relations while omitting full financial details. A comfortable majority is expected in both houses with a confidence vote possible tonight or Wednesday.
El Paso dated report says Ray Patton of Alpha Oklahoma wounded an officer during a failed raid toward the New Mexico border. Patton and Velma Hilton, 19, were in a stolen Cadillac. Patton captured after anesthesia, Velma held as material witness. Hilton survived despite bullets and later described their Sapulpa departure toward the border.
Two more arrests were made in the Maryland drug and chemical company case. The cruiser Denver landed a force at Ceiba Honduras to protect American lives and property. The Los Angeles trip to New England was postponed due to bad weather. Secretary Mellon announced negotiations with another country on its war debts. President Coolidge led speakers at the 34th annual Daughters of the American Revolution convention. The district supreme court dismissed the Pacific Mail injunction to block sale of five steamship vessels.
Santa Fe April 20 F M Vandiver 38 was killed instantly when he stepped backward into a running pulley at Mc Curdy's raw mill 12 miles west of Espanola. His skull was crushed. His wife and two children lived at Espanola. They had planned a picnic Sunday and she was preparing lunch when the tragedy occurred.
Rumors circulate in Santa Fe that U S District Attorney John W. Wilson of the New Mexico district may resign. A telegram from Attorney General Sargent summons Wilson to Washington for a conference following his succession of George H. Craig last summer.
Police Judge George E. Roddy fined and jailed members of a Sunday night disorderly group at 1023 South Walter. Arthur Gomez and Betsy Gomez received 100 dollars for liquor and 100 dollars for a disorderly house plus 30 days in jail. Maria Trego and Lucy Garcia got 30 dollars and five days each for disorderly conduct. J A Smith Shirley Campbell and Dean Austin were fined 59 dollars for disorderly conduct. Henry Leftige received 30 dollars and 15 days suspended after a fight at his home. Mrs Leftice was removed from the courtroom as the dispute escalated. Leftice sought a divorce claiming he could no longer endure the situation. Henry Roundtree was fined 60 dollars and 10 days for stealing an automobile spotlight.
Farmington New Mexico April 20 Well No 6 of the Bloomfield Gas and Oil company struck producing sand Sunday and an explosion followed severely burning Daniel Salmon who was running the drill during a lunch break. Salmon’s hands were badly burned and his face swollen though he kept the water line open to flood the well. The rig survived and repairs will delay drilling for oil production a few days. The strike occurred at 680 feet.
In Lisbon on Saturday a brief military revolt killed 12 and wounded 73. The government will fix responsibility and dissolve the regiment involved. Martial law remains in effect and the newspaper Seculo is suspended until constitutional guarantees are restored.
Chris Karris was killed by his brother Frank in a kitchen knife duel at their south side restaurant. A quarrel over which of two bakery companies should receive their business sparked the fight.
The New Mexico State Finance Board authorized A. Jannett and State Auditor Juan N. Vigil to hire a special attorney to sue county officials on bond charges from audits by the state comptroller. The proposed suit seeks about 180000 dollars. The board asked five banks qualified as state fiscal agents to submit proposals at the May meeting.
Milton Robinson stands trial in Roswell for first degree murder in the death of Fred O Dell at Hagerman late 1924. Former cotton farmers from Hagerman. defense by J C Gilbert H M Dow. prosecution led by Dillard Wyatt with J C Fullen assisting. Trial expected to last at least a week.
Charles L. Mellor a 21 year old Chicago mechanic won the American marathon feature at Boston amid a northwest wind and near freezing air. He finished 26 miles 385 yards from Hopkinton to Boston in about 2 hours 2 minutes and 86 seconds, beating Clarence de Mar by 36 seconds to claim the national amateur marathon title. Frank Zuna and Albert Micheleen finished third and fourth.
Four St Paul men died when their car overturned into a creek near White Bear north of the city. Three other passengers were rescued from five feet of water.
A detachment of 165 Marines from the cruiser Denver landed at Ceiba, Honduras, by order of Captain W N Jeffers to protect foreign lives and property amid a Honduran revolt led by General Gregorio Ferrera. Local authorities joined in requesting naval protection as instability spreads near Tegucigalpa and the Salvadorean border. Ferrera potentially in Guatemala. officials warn of renewed efforts to topple the Tegucigalpa government if recovery delays occur.
Geneva April 20 Soviet Russia refuses to attend the upcoming conference on control of traffic in arms. Foreign Minister Tchitcherin says Moscow has long opposed the League of Nations as organized and cannot collaborate with it on a matter he calls interference in the Soviet Union’s internal affairs.
A gusty snow storm swept over this section of New Hampshire today piling up five inches tonight.
J W Mequeen president of the Sloss Sheffield Steel company died in New York after a week long illness with influenza.
In Great Falls Montana, Senator Burton Wheeler faced testimony from George B. Hayes who said Wheeler asked him to appear before the Interior Department regarding oil permits, offering to share a retainer fee and implying a big payment. The witness described meetings in New York in March 1923 and a lobby stop at the Waldorf Astoria.
New York report says a five car subway train with over 100 passengers partly left the rails early today. The last two cars swiped seven steel pillars, a short circuit caused smoke and panic, and firemen used axes and crowbars to pry open doors after lights went out.
Santa Fe April 20 Attorney General J W Armstrong states the last half of 1924 taxes do not become delinquent until June 1 1925 under the old law, while the new law shifts delinquency to May 1925 for later taxes. Tax authorities for Southern Pacific and Santa Fe plan May 1 payments.
