Coal Barons Now Merciless Where They Were Lenient
Report by Jessie M Partson from Pittsburgh describes miners facing harsher conditions after a period of strikes. Strike funds, raised penny by penny from miners and families across ethnic groups, were meant to aid workers, but wage gains are erased by higher living costs. Company rents rise, stores limit outside purchases, and some workers sell assets to survive while only one miner owns a home.
