A St Louis Dispatch report describes a child named John Murphy with severe heart disease blamed on excessive coffee drinking. He first arrived with a heart rate of 160 and, after a month of abstaining, cooled to 100. For two years he drank nine to twelve cups daily, suffered chest pains, insomnia, and loss of appetite. With treatment and coffee abstinence, his heart function improved, and doctors hope for a longer life. The piece warns of widespread coffee-related heart weakness and promotes Postum as a coffee substitute.
