Notoriously bad manners of American children

Ella Wheeler Wilcox argues American children abroad face criticism and urges parents to instill courtesy. She questions teaching doors, unspoken apologies, table manners, toilet etiquette, and respect for elders, urging firm correction and private training over public display. The piece continues with a playful transition to "Playing Authors."

Changing Tastes in Playing Card Authors

The Old Person learns that readers favor new popular writers over classic names, with only Dickens and Holmes enduring as old favorites. Publishers now offer scientific, fictional, poetic, historical, and miscellaneous author decks, even a magazine-writer themed set, reflecting shifts in card game themes.

Money Values Across Europe and America Debate

A discussion contrasts how Americans pursue dollars versus Europeans. The piece argues dollars buy more in the U S than in Europe, enabling opportunity for those deemed “the right sort of man.” It links financial means to freedom, recognition, and chance, noting European envy and American spendthrift attitudes. It also sketches Santa Fe County school funding, listing apportionment figures and population estimates.

Superstition and its consequences in fortune telling tales

A curio of belief contrasts two fortune telling stories. In one, two women predictably married after a public palmistry insult, while in Budapest Archduke Joseph August prophecies a tragedy that soon mirrors itself in motor accidents. Walpole and Chesnut lore echo hauntings, as a bishop recalls a white apparition that turns out real through a madhouse doctor’s explanation.

Congress Controls Chippewa Indian Forest Reserve

The Minnesota forest reserve remains the only forest reserve created by act of Congress, not presidential proclamation. The Morris bill of 1902 tasked the Bureau of Forestry with selecting 225,000 acres from pine and agricultural lands, reserving 6,400 acres around Cass Lake, and retaining 5 percent of merchantable timber to be left standing for reforestation while selling the rest to fund Indian benefits. The bureau has already chosen 105,000 acres and sold the pine timber with restrictions, planning to finish marking and harvesting over several years.
