Robber Identified in 1889 Train Hold-Up in Houston
A prominent Houston citizen was identified by John T. Dickey, then Wells Fargo express messenger on the Houston & Texas Central line, as the train robber who looted about 25 000 from the express car on September 24 1889. Dickey studied the robber’s features during the half hour face to face confrontation and later recognized him in a store in South Texas after 15 years away. The man denied the accusation and offered to restore the stolen amount with interest.
