Man Offers Life for Five Dollars in Kansas City

An unemployed Canadian-born man, Edward Murphy, who has been in a Jackson County home for over a year, sought to sell his life and body for five dollars. He traveled to Kansas City, met representatives from the Help Ling Hand Institute, and discussed a painless death contract while claiming incurable disease. He would allow medical societies or colleges to purchase and use his body, with payment to be made if a suitable purchaser could be found. A purchasing agent offered up to forty six dollars, but Murphy insisted on five dollars, stating he preferred a quick sale to avoid charity or long pain. He agreed to diet to reach the necessary weight and would sign any contract to end his life.
