Santa Fe cuts miles to gain grade and line for main route

The Santa Fe advances a costly Belen cutoff to reduce 6.7 miles of track, gain 2000 feet in elevation savings over Raton range, and shave ten hours from passenger schedules. The plan shifts freight to the new Texico Rio Puerco route, abandons the current line via Flornee to Albuquerque, and builds a tunnel with a towered grade to connect Texico and Rio Puerco. The project promises faster Chicago to Los Angeles and Chicago to San Francisco links, plus a shorter Kansas City to San Francisco path.
