Heat Prostration and Deaths Mark Elks Parade Day

Philadelphia July 19 Thousands of Elks parade spectators were overwhelmed by heat and humidity with about one hundred kept overnight in hospitals. At least four deaths were recorded and about a dozen cases deemed serious by doctors. Tens of thousands watched the 10,000 Elks and forty bands as hospitals strained to handle the influx. Many victims sought shelter in homes, businesses, and hotels as the event ended.
