Cleveland dispatch reports August Otto an elderly man killed his wife with a carpenter's mallet. He claimed she could not live long and planned an accidental death to avoid jail. He confessed after police inquiry, detailing a chilling staged crime scene and concealment efforts.
Socorro citizens gave Judge Frank W Parker and Mrs Parker a grand reception and ball at the opera house. The theatre was crowded and guests danced until the early hours, with about 100 attendees noted.
A Topeka dispatch reports Milwaukee based Modern Woodmen endorsing the national fraternal sanitarium project. More than two million fraternalists have supported the movement with no discouragement, and organizers expect to reach Las Vegas soon.

John F. Stevens, succeeding Wallace as engineer of the Panama Canal, is noted as a railway expert with a high reputation in the Philippine commission and a distinguished career in civil engineering.

Located at Black Mesa midway between Dawson and Raton the party aims to haul coal and gold ore from Elizabeth town and extend the line as engineers Phillips and Dodge build from Durango to Farmington New Mexico.
Early today an unknown party piled tes and stones on the westbound Overland Limited near Buford, Wyoming. The engineer and fireman halted the train. eight tramps were later arrested near the scene and suspected of placing the obstruction in revenge for being cut from trains.
The Albuquerque Browns depart tonight for Las Vegas to face the Blues in a two game series. Manager J. Houston and D. N. Combs accompany the team as they seek both wins after two days of hard practice. Gallegos starts Saturday and Rip Starr takes the mound Sunday. Houston also announced plans to play El Paso on the 16th, with details pending.
Pablo Sails, a prominent Alameda fruit ranch owner aged 47, died yesterday after a short pneumonia illness. He leaves a wife and several children. funeral services were held this afternoon in Alameda and burial followed in Alameda cemetery.
Topeka July 7 State supreme court declares that Kansas Natural Gas cannot do business in Kansas cannot hold property or operate pipelines Tan. The court also declares unconstitutional the $410 000 refinery appropriation law passed last winter aimed at restricting Standard Oil.
Oyster Bay July 7 Official announcement that Elihu Root was appointed secretary of state was made by President Roosevelt. Root accepted the post and will take the oath in a couple of weeks, with relocation to Washington not permanent until September as he wraps up current business.
Oyster Bay July 7 President Roosevelt is greatly gratified by Mr Root accepting the cabinet post and notes the personal sacrifices made by Root in resuming public duties. The decision was reached on the president's special train on the Cleveland return and announced after the Sagamore Hill return.
Tokio July 7 The diplomatic corps hosted a farewell reception for Baron Kamura senior plenipotentiary of Japan and his staff as peace talks prepare in Washington. The Minnesota is expected to reach Yokohama July 8 and sail for Seattle with the Japanese peace commissioners aboard in the evening.
Sioux City Iowa reports the Big Sioux River rising higher than two years with flood danger along fifty miles of banks. At Riverside Park boat clubs are flooded and thousands of acres of corn are ruined. The river width ranges from half a mile to three miles in places. The same bulletin notes federal court intervention in the Caleb Powers case with Judge Cochran taking jurisdiction in Louisville Kentucky.

He nearly bled to death but was saved and the condemned man was hanged that day after killing William A. Watkins and James Greson a year earlier in jealousy. A separate dispatch from Cherbourg notes John Paul Jones and 600 American sailors arriving in a funeral train from Paris with plans to transfer the body aboard the Brooklyn and set sail for the United States tomorrow evening.
Mexico marks the 100th birthday of Benito Juarez with nationwide ceremonies across towns and cities. Authorities, associations, and private groups plan statues, street names, and a musical hymn contest in Mexico City. Juarez' birthplace anniversary on July 18 will feature elaborate ceremonies in the city named for him.
