The Plodder’s Creed and Lincolnian Anecdotes

A newspaper item recalls the value of perseverance with a tale of a great French astronomer who nearly quit, spurred by a note from D Alembert. Lincoln and General Wilson share a tale about Grant and a mule to illustrate hanging on. It argues perseverance wins races, not swift talent, and warns that the lack of staying power derails many bright graduates. It ends with brief notes on local industry: new machinery at Kelly sine, Crayhie mine tunneling, and a coal shaft being sunk with miners in demand.

Baldwin of California Aces Ties and Tragedy Tale

For over fifty years Mr Baldwin was a colorful California figure with vast assets near Los Angeles. He owned 6000 acres, racehorses that won four American Derbies, and casinos in Market Street that burned after erection. In his eighties, eyesight failing, he consents to enforced retirement from fortune seeking. He never admitted defeat, regrouping after losses and continuing the game of chance.
