A fire aboard the steamship Oceanic in steerage caused negligible damage after crew extinguished it and the ship proceeded to New York. In California a separate blaze in Oroville destroyed a block, injured several firemen including three fatally, with about 150000 dollars in losses and multiple missing people.
In New York on August 23 a twelve hour closed session with representatives from seven-eights of the Royal Arcanum membership across the U S and Canada passed resolutions urging the supreme council to rescind its May decision increasing rates. Open charges of breach of trust were laid against the supreme council and action is to be taken at Put-in-Bay next week.
Health authorities struggle to curb a typhoid outbreak centered on Bath Beach Benson Hurst and Ulmer Park in Brooklyn. Theories point to sewage contaminated bay water from tidal backflow and beach bathing. Nearly 2,000 cases and about 400 deaths have occurred, with fears of spread to Manhattan and crowded districts if unchecked.
Portland visitors witness a remarkable artwork at the Lewis and Clark Exposition. A Lincoln likeness was formed on limestone by mineral deposition from Thermopolis Hot Springs water, taking two months to produce a one inch thick stone slab. The slab is displayed in the Mines and Minerals building’s Wyoming section for public viewing.

New York dispatch reports Senator W. A. Clark of Montana, recovering from surgery, sailed for Paris aboard the Baltic and is expected to stay several weeks.
Newport August 23 Messrs Ward and Wright, reigning champions, defeated Alexander and Hackett challengers for the United States championship in doubles. The score was 6 to 2, 6 to 1.
A well attended recital at St Marys presented by the Immaculate Conception church choir featured entirely young performers with notable musical talent. Each number drew lively applause, marking a successful community event.

New Orleans Aug 28 The board of health and the marine hospital service struggle to contain yellow fever as new infection points appear daily. The worst area is Souville near the Ba you La Fourche where about three hundred residents are ill and deaths have occurred. City totals show 1515 cases and 215 deaths to date.
Captain A. W. Kimball United States Army recently relieved from Philippine service and on furlough to Albuquerque will report for duty at Fort Snelling Minnesota. He takes over as superintendent of construction at United States Army port facilities, with a brief stop to visit relatives before resuming service.
In San Francisco on August 23 stockholders of the Western Pacific Railway were called to meet to authorize boosting capital from 56 million to 75 million. The company recently authorized a large debt and the interest on the energy project would be guaranteed by the Western Railway. In St Louis the attorney general and others prepared to attend a hearing on the Armen land grant suit, representing the contestants.
E R Rowan telegraph operator at Isleta junction is jailed on a charge of altering a railway pass from Isleta to El Paso. He was arrested by Depot Master G H Gray on a warrant by Special Officer Charles Manly. Hearing postponed to Friday when Conductor Griffith will testify. Brother has hired attorney W C Heacock. Santa Fe prosecutor W Dobson leads the case. Also note Ogdensburg Civil War monument unveiled by Vice President Fairbanks with military units in attendance.
The Georgia State Agricultural Society convened in Albany on August 28 with President Hughes opening the session. Mayor Lipplit welcomed delegates, and J K Hays of Montana spoke for the association. An executive session follows and a Cotton King lecture by Daniel J. Sully is planned. Cattle and sheep receipts were reported in Chicago with mixed prices and strong market activity.
