A Valdosta reader reports finding a rusted stem in a Patent Dust Proof Case after a watch was submerged in twelve feet of river water for two hours. The owner later claimed the atom became hard to turn but the watch still ran and was repaired. The tester B W Bently endorses the device for railroad and mill workers.
Clinton Iowa April 29 1881 report describes a stem winding Wm Ellery watch tested after being lost in the woods and recovered from water after three months with minimal damage. The note asserts the screw bezel case is dueto-proof in gold and silver. First-class jewelers promote the watch case.
Public notice lists pricing for subscriptions: one year at a fixed rate, six months and three months options, and single copies priced at five cents each. No currency symbols are clear but indicates period-based rates and per-copy pricing.
Davisville Illinois April 19 1883 letter describes Cedar Rapids Iowa transformation from 25 years prior with new bridges mills and railroads. The writer visits farms stores schools and homes of locals including Legore Miner and Prickett families noting Bohemian landowners and the silent old sites. He reports hospitality in Iowa and shares family news from Bax ter Springs and Albion area as well as Galena small pox and Columbus building boom.
In Southeastern Kansas, April 21, 1883, the Ep New Era notes a backward spring with blooming fruit trees fading but strong peach prospects. Corn acreage exceeds prior years by about a fourth while wheat looks acceptable overall given large plantings.
