Byron L Hafferty died at his Avilla home last Wednesday morning after a long illness of locomotor ataxia. He was sixty seven, widely respected. Survived by widow and son Ralph of this city. Obsequies held at the residence Sunday afternoon.
Albion residents hosted and visited relatives from Walkerton Garrett and Bascom Ohio with church and club activity noted. Cromwell reports two weeks of electric plant trouble while Wolf Lake school prepares new building north of present site under contractor Charles B Miller of Columbia City.
Albion Chautauqua reports Cromwell streets oiled. Rev E F Lilley did business at Marin last week. Goshen visitors stay with Barcus family. Pond Lily train resumes summer runs for Rome City cottagers. Purdue July graduates exceed 300. Indiana National Guard maneuvers set for Ft Benjamin Harrison August 16 25. Government officials to work four hours daily for three months from July 17 including postmasters.
Indiana reports show 150 automobiles sold daily with 53 511 licenses issued this year. Rural areas receive the largest share while cities see strong delivery numbers. There are 480 dealers, 8 597 motorcycles sold, and 2 250 licensed chauffeurs in the state. Transfers of licenses for secondhand cars are requested at 2 to 12 per day.
The Albion New Era reports June 24 1886 notices including a town celebration, marshals corralling livestock, commercial house repairs, Elza Shaffer’s newborn son, Elmer Haney moving for a new home, a speech by Commander Saltzgaber at Ligomier, engine hose completion for the fire company, and a June 16 1886 marriage of W R Zimmerman to Christina E Wick in Noble County Indiana.

The Noble county convention drew about 800 Republicans including former Progressives. Judge Edward Jackson and Charles Lane spoke on party achievements and unity. Bailey won the sheriff nomination after a single ballot. the ticket includes Field, Erwin, Riddle, Bailey, Cowan, Knox, Black, Hill, and Ot Noble. Harvest outlook cited with early harvest forecasts and wheat ripening.
An advertisement for Spirella Corsets touts custom fitted corsets by Mrs B R Suir the corsetiere. The copy highlights the best dressed woman wearing gowns and corsets tailored to her measurement.
The U S Bureau of Agriculture advises pruning climbing roses after blooming to direct growth to new wood that produced flowers this year. For low trellises cut shoots to ground level, while high trellises require removing only about four feet of old growth to allow new shoots to replace the top.
The Dekalb county court house in Auburn was dedicated with exercises on Thursday led by J W Hanan of Lagrange. The event included the Old Letters meeting and the Dekalb county editors convention with thousands attending and music by three bands from Auburn Garrett and Butler.
The U S Express company informs its railroad partners it will cease operations on June 30. Wells Fargo Express company is expected to take over the service. Miss Anna Cockley is visiting her sister Mrs. Walter Sharpnack in Fort Wayne.
