A New England resident paid a washerwoman 1.50 weekly plus 25 cent dinners and extras, totaling nearly 100 a year. He replaced her with an electric washing machine powered by a tiny motor, costing about 4 cents a week and under 30 dollars yearly, washing and wringing with less wear.

Old Settlers Meeting Postponed to July 22

The Old Settlers meeting scheduled for July 15 is postponed due to the late harvest and will now be held on Thursday, July 22. Prof. W. L. Fairfield of Tri State College Angola will deliver the address. The Albion band will provide music and additional features are planned.

Postmasters Salaries Boosted and Cut in Indiana

The postal department releases readjusted salaries for Indiana postmasters. Seventy-one receive increases averaging $100 yearly, while twenty-three face reductions. Notable boosts start July 1 in Albion, Angola, Auburn, Fort Wayne, and South Bend among others. largest cut listed for Fort Wayne at $3,700.

Tax ferret Workman probes Elkhart stock tax dodge

Joseph B. Workman, known in Noble County, hired by Elkhart County to expose unlisted stock holdings, pressed United States Steel holders to settle after alleging access to books via a tax ferret group. For every dollar tax paid, Workman receives thirty five cents. original 3000 dollar appropriation exhausted and a 10000 dollar new appropriation approved.

Death of Charles Simona Civil War veteran farmer

Charles Simona a Swan township farmer and Civil War veteran died last Tuesday at his home west of Swan at age seventy six. His wife had died two years earlier. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Lutheran church in Bethlehem with Rev. C. S. Bream officiating assisted by Rev. A. W. Steintueth.
