Foundation Day Highlights Growth of Indiana State Normal

The Indiana State Normal School marked its forty fourth anniversary on January 6 with a morning address by Professor J G Collicott and an evening musical program led by Miss Gladys Botsford. The day featured a reception, a large student turnout, and reflections on the school’s evolution from 16 students in 1870 to about 3,000 today with a 60,000 volume library and a faculty of 50. The address praised progress in teacher training for Indiana public schools.

Obituary of Mrs Halferty Pioneer Elder of Mt Pleasant

Mrs. Robert Halferty born Sophia Waltman in Bedford county Pennsylvania on June 17 1830 died January 10 1914 at her Noble county Indiana home aged 83 years 6 months 24 days She moved with her family to Richland Ohio at age eight and joined Woodbury Evangelical Lutheran Church Then in 1849 she married Robert Halferty They had seven children three of whom predeceased them The couple moved to Indiana in 1850 and settled on a farm in Noble County They helped establish Mt Pleasant Evangelical Lutheran Church She taught in the Sabbath school and remained active in worship until near her death Services were held at her home and at Mt Pleasant Church with interment in Mt Pleasant cemetery Rev Charles S Bream presiding An appreciation note thanks neighbors choir and Ladies Aid societies for condolences and floral gifts.

The State Board of Forestry offers forty dollars in prizes to encourage preservation of native forests and planting on nonfarm land.
