Papich Rites Here Today
A requiem Mass for M. A. Mike Papich was conducted by Rev. Father L. Heinen at 9 am at St. Marys Church. Burial followed in St. Marys Cemetery. Papich died Monday afternoon in Monroe County Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired miner and a prominent union official, who came to Albia in 1913 from Croatia. He helped organize the local Hocking union in 1914 and was its secretary until his death. He was cited by V. I. Mondich of Pittsburgh as supreme president of the National Croatian Union with over 102,000 members. He was 86 at death and had a leg and foot injury early in his mining career but continued mining for about 20 years. He engaged in light farming at his home, 1109 G Ave. E.

Gas Election On Tuesday In Albia
Albia voters will go to the polls Tuesday for a second time in a month to decide on a natural gas franchise for Iowa Southern Utilities Co. Polls will open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at four locations: First Ward City Hall, Second Ward Marlin and Son, Third Ward Shaw's Garage, and Fourth Ward Geode Seed and Feed. An Albia Gas Co. franchise was defeated in a May 12 special election. The council then approved ISU's franchise and set June 16 for a special election. An ISU franchise has been approved in Moravia, to be served via a lateral line from the Michigan Wisconsin Pipe Line Company's main line through Appanoose County.
