Petersburg area faces no new road work next season
Robert Sharp deputy highway commissioner told Petersburg Chamber members that no road construction is planned in the area for 1965 though Mitkof Highway widening from town may extend beyond the 14.2 miles in the five year plan. Engineers will survey downtown Petersburg and Lumber Street routes for a widening and paving project while Green Construction Co. will finish current jobs this year.

State ferry Matanuska trials and Alaska schedule shifts
The Matanuska underwent trials on Puget Sound with Seattle papers noting plans to run in SE Alaska around June 20 though no official word yet. Malaspina northbound to Prince Rupert departs Skagway at 10:30 p.m. June 1 with Sitka skipped. several June trips from Skagway and Prince Rupert are deleted while service resumes June 19 in Juneau northbound. About 850,000 pounds of halibut were landed in Petersburg in the first round, below last season’s level, with catches averaging about 15 percent less per boat. First in NW regional speech contest at Seattle Toastmistress event
Mrs George Rice won the NW regional speech contest during the 16th annual International Toastmistress conference in Seattle last Saturday. She has led Petersburg Toastmistress Club for over two years after winning the local contest in March and Council 13 in April. Representatives from 13 councils including California Washington Oregon British Columbia and Alaska attended the three day gathering with over 110 clubs represented.

City Manager Dotts Reports Weekly Pay Raises for City Employees

Hospital Board approves wage raises and budget revision
The Hospital Board granted pay raises totaling up to 15 per cent for staff including a new top nurse pay of 435 dollars monthly under a next year budget of 97 540 dollars down from 99 550.
