Festival to Honor Norway Culture With May Events

Oscar Wikan Funeral Held in Petersburg
Funeral services were held yesterday for Oscar Wikan who died suddenly early Monday. A Petersburg resident since 1923 he worked as a fisherman and was born February 11 1896 in Rissa Norway. He belonged to the Sons of Norway Petersburg Fishermen’s Union and the Elks lodge and was never married. Burial was at Petersburg Memorial Cemetery. Surviving are his brothers Andrew Olaf and her of Petersburg and three brothers and five sisters in Norway.

Petersburg Alaska mourns as 57 year old cold storage engineer Lee Steear dies at home after a presumed heart attack. Born December 25, 1906 in Grenada Oregon he moved to Alaska in 1928 and worked for the Bureau of Public Roads before joining Petersburg cold storage. He and wife Ruth had life memberships with the Petersburg Library Association for his help in establishing the library. Funeral plans were noted for Petersburg.

Washington Sen Ernest Gruening says conferees agreed to a 400000 appropriation for an Alaska road needs study. Congress had authorized 200000 with a mid May 1964 completion, House blocked funding in the current year bill, Senate backed full sum, compromise now before both chambers for action. The Alaska delegation plans to seek the remaining 400000 in a Commerce Department bill starting July.

Coast Guard reports an uncharted rock pinnacle near Petersburg harbor entrance caused the Taku to run aground on April 25. The rock, about five feet high, lies 520 yards from Wrangell Narrows Channel Daybeacon 61 and is not on charts. Repairs proceed in Seattle as engineers seek removal with Puget Sound Dredge Co. support.
