The annual Mother Daughter banquet revived by the PTA last Friday pleased attendees with a Mother Day program and dinner. Hostess Mrs Forrest Fryer led the event with thanks to committee members and the Lutheran church for use of facilities.
At a large Petersburg PTA gathering on Wednesday, Forrest Fryer was installed president with Mrs. Richard Brennan as secretary and Miss Esther Evans as treasurer. L. R. McDonald praised the group’s 15 years of growth, and various performances and a photo show highlighted the program. The session approved treasurer audits, a new fire escape, and $400 from the cook book fund for playground equipment. Ivor Schott will chair the playground committee. Refreshments were served and thanks given to retiring president George Lloyd and other officers.
Garden Club members meet at Mrs. Elias Sivertson's home with Mrs. Harry Colp presiding. They plan a club library at Vi's Greenhouse and Gift Shop and an spring plant and bulb exchange. Mrs. Sandvik reviews The Growing of Delphiniums article noting four propagation methods. Slides of Petersburg gardens entertain. Refreshments served by Mrs. Sivertson and Mrs. Forgie.
Delegate Bartlett of Alaska doubts Congress will pass statehood this year. He cites the Senate Interior Committee’s inaction on Hawaii and uncertainty at the House Rules Committee as factors delaying the Alaska bill. Bartlett and Crawford seek party leadership guidance before a hoped House vote.
Mayor Carl Vevelstad proclaims Saturday May 29 1948 as Poppy Day in Petersburg urging all citizens to wear the memorial poppy to honor Alaska men who died in World War I and II and those who served. The proclamation honors the memory and sacrifices of the armed forces and calls observance by the community.
The Sons of Norway met with John Hammer presiding in Andrew Wikan’s absence. They discussed cooperating with the Daughters of Norway for the May 17 celebration including a May 15 dance and a May 17 pot luck dinner. The next meeting is set for May 20.
Mrs Clarence Walters returned home this week from visits to Skagway Sitka and Douglas. She stayed two weeks in Sitka under doctor care and was a guest of Mr and Mrs John Cushing during the Sitka stay. She also visited the orthopedic hospital.
More than 25,000,000 Americans will wear the American Legion Auxiliary memorial poppy on Poppy Day May 29 as tribute to aead of both wars. Mrs Charles Anderson Poppy Chairman Petersburg Unit Auxiliary estimates.
Roy Torwick, co owner of the Waswick and Torwick store, was called south this week as his father has been ill for some time.
The Daughters of Norway plan a food sale on Saturday May 22 to raise funds for a hospital operating table. Proceeds will support the hospital fund and aid critical medical equipment purchases.
The Home Extension office relocates this week to an upstairs space above Modern Grocery, formerly housed in the library, announced by Mary Robinson.
The halibut season opens with boats delivering catches from May 2 to May 6. Landings include Edward Lee 2000, Ukum 1500, Lady Luck 1300, Three Brothers 2100, Ta toosh 6200, Lois W 12000, Lenore 10500, Bravo 15000, and Munroe 32000 sent to Ket chikan and other buyers. Prices range around 12 to 13 cents with some dips and rises.
A flotilla of boats delivered an estimated 120000 pounds of fish including vessels named Gertrude Vesta Marian Pegge Genador Vesta Chum Balder and another unnamed craft associated with Henry Freel.
Vern Counter of the local CAA station reports April brought only 1.10 inches of rain, a new record. The prior record was 3.55 inches in 1982, with a long term average of 6.49 inches. Ketchikan saw 1.58 inches, down from 13.94 inches in April 1847.
Star reporter DAD ELKINS notes village updates from West Petersburg. Chuck Fitzgerald owns a quarter acre in squash and cucumbers slated for late June market. Perry Langley reports a large corn crop this year. Mat Rayner visits home with his father Frank. Mr and Mrs Fred Birch return from a month in Ketchikan. Eighteen cast ballots in the primary election.
Mrs Jimmy Rhinehart spent a few hours in Petersburg on Thursday visiting Gussie York of the Citizen's Laundry. She paused during her husband’s return trip to Ketchikan.
A meeting in Fetchikan with Forest officers and operators discussed disposal of locally unsalable sawlogs after the Juneau mill closure. Archbold of Ketchikan and Marshall of Petersburg attended with Burdick noting permits will be granted for logs cut before July 1. Export points may move logs to ease the emergency but this is not a future precedent. Local timber growth is key to Alaska’s economy, with Puget Sound mills showing interest.
The Lutheran church holds a Mother's Day service Sunday at 11:00 AM. The worship honors Christian mothers and includes the Sunday school and children's choir. Join a grand service of home and heaven this Mother's Day.
Mrs Frederick Nelson and youngest son Bobby are aboard the Alaska heading south. They will meet Mr Nelson and Donald in Seattle next week, then travel east for Frederick Jr's graduation from the U S Naval Academy in Annapolis on June 4. After graduation he takes a 30 day Navy leave, and the family will tour the southern states to the West Coast.
Mrs. Miriam Benson returned home this week after a one month visit to friends in the San Fernando Valley California.
Don Foster of the Alaska Native Service thanks Petersburg for Mt Edgecumbe hospital support. Sitka chapter outlines a visiting program for children, asks for educational materials, and urges contributions of crafts, toys, books, and art supplies.
Petersburg welcomes the Mil kof Ice Cream Parlor opening on Saturday at 2 p m. Owners Mr and Mrs Knut Brekne invite residents to inspect the shop. Interior decorator Henry Stratus finished remodeling and Mrs Brekne will serve cake and coffee free of charge.
The scheduled execution for Eugene Lamoore, convicted of killing Juneau grocer Jim Ellen on December 22 1946, has been delayed awaiting the Ninth Circuit Appeals Court decision. United States Attorney P J Gilmore Jr filed a motion to dismiss the appeal, with no ruling yet.
The Emblem Club will hold its annual officers election on Tuesday May 11 with District Deputy Anne Whaley to install new officers around May 20. President Mrs Ballard asks committee chairs to bring year reports and entertainment chairmen plan a Mothers Day party after the meeting. Refreshments will be provided by hostesses Mrs Raymond Swanson and others.
The employees and their spouses were guests of Gus Sie York, owner of Citizens Laundry, for a turkey dinner in the Recreation dining room last week. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Bert Espeseth, Mr. and Mrs. Erling Espeseth, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Roundtree, Mr. and Mrs. Sig Klabo, Mr. and Mrs. Ingebrit Johnson, Norman Olsen, Gene White, Arden Hall, and hostess Gussie York.
The Petersburg town council held a three hour session on Monday night addressing local problems. Walter Peterson reported Scow Bay power lines in poor condition and requested immediate pole replacements. The council approved an $18 164 budget quota for the coming year and discussed tax assessor and dog license figures. A University of Washington glee club visit was tentatively set for June 24 to 28, with several salaries approved for town staff.
May 12 marked as National Hospital Day with a silver tea in Petersburg under the Hospital Guild. Proceeds will aid hospital equipment purchases. plans led by guild president Mrs Arnold Wasvick for an afternoon tea in the Elks hall.
The Baranof will stop in Petersburg on its southbound voyage Sunday May 16 carrying passengers and freight to Seattle. Announced today by Dick Miller.
