Alaska Steamship cuts SE Alaska service after injunction
Alaska Steamship Co imposes drastic SE Alaska service reductions from May 20 after a U S district court injunction blocks higher rates. Sailings May 13 and this Friday proceed to Ketchikan Juneau Sitka Petersburg Wrangell, with later service limited to Ket chikan Juneau only. The company will seek relief in the ninth circuit while freight service may be stepped up by Avery Trucking Co.

Protesters Oppose Dry Strait Bridge Permit Request
Four protests were filed to the corps of engineers over Alaska’s permit for a Dry Strait bridge from Mitkof Island to the Stikine River flats. Protesting groups included Alaska Steamship Co and Wrangell Chamber of Commerce. the state seeks a 50 ft vertical clearance and 300 ft horizontal clearance. The application goes to the Secretary of the Army in Washington for a decision. Also noted is Elk’s Mother’s Day service at 2 pm with an Emblem Club tea to follow. public invited.

Officials approved a June 7 bond election to raise 100000 for a 376500 expansion funded by federal Hill Harris and state and city funds. The Petersburg Nurses meet Tuesday night at 8, while Hill Harris officials canceled their Hill Harris visit until July.
