Cordova Fire Destroys Heart Of Business District
Fire in Cordova wiped out the downtown core, destroying about six stores two bars a bowling alley the weekly Times and an apartment building. One hundred fifty people were left homeless as 31 buildings were damaged or destroyed and the blaze burned from 3 am for six hours. Alaska agencies aided in firefighting and relief efforts. Local communications were cut but restored by Coast Guard radio and airport support.

City conducts 265 of 600 vehicle safety checks
Police Chief Arrington announced 265 vehicles checked last night in a city wide effort to ensure roadworthy cars and trucks. Of those, 125 were sent to repair, five were towed for shutdown, and 47, or more, were repaired by owners who brought vehicles in at their convenience tomorrow morning or afternoon. State Patrolman Soriano will assist Petersburg officers the rest of the week in the checks.

Mrs Rice Wins TM Contest In Northwest Region Event
Florabelle E Georg Rice tied for first in the Council 13 speech contest at Beacher night and will represent Juneau at the Northwest Region contest May 24 26 in Seattle. Julie Isaac of Juneau was runner up with Maja Grzesik of Prince Rupert and Ruth Lloyd of Ketchikan among other contestants. The gathering drew 22 out of town delegates from Juneau Ketchikan Prince Rupert and Terrace. Charlotte Frantz was elected council chair with Bernadine Trones as vice chair and Doris Charles as secretary, Nolda Sharp as treasurer. Florabelle received a red rose corsage and a speech contest Winner's pin. Stella Young installed new officers and a workshop followed.
