Anchorage Death Claims Petersburg Native Sara Williams
Sara Williams 40 a Petersburg resident died suddenly Monday in the Public Health Service Hospital Anchorage. Cause of death not announced. Survivors include five children and her parents all of Petersburg. Funeral planned at St Catherine's Church Petersburg with burial in Petersburg Memorial Cemetery. Williams was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Two Forest Service Men Escape In Near Collision At Sea
Two Forest Service employees narrowly escaped when their skiff was hit by a halibut fishing boat near Frederick Sound. Houston Hannafious jumped clear as Marlin Johnson stayed aboard. The larger vessel towed the damaged skiff to town. Coast Guard had no report.

Alaska State Elks Officers Meet in Petersburg
The Alaska State Elks Association Spring meeting will be held in Petersburg from May 9 to May 11 with about 100 members and ladies expected. Officers and lodge heads will join workshop sessions to plan charitable activities for the Elks centennial year. The Kodiak ritualistic team will compete against the Ketchikan group. The Coast Guard Cape Florida remained on station near Spike Rock Buoy No 9 after a log raft moved it, causing damage to several vessels.

Little Norway Festival to Honor Outstanding Norwegian American
Petersburg plans a three day Little Norway Festival starting May 18 featuring an Outstanding Norwegian American award presented by Fred Eastaugh. Events include a smorgasbord at Beachcomber graduation Senior Ball Pancake Breakfast fashion show by Alaska Crippled Children and Adults Association and a seafood dinner at Petersburg Fisheries cannery with a halibut fleet arrival anticipated. The festival closes with a 2 to 5 pm salmon bake at Sandy Beach.

Petersburg Hero Receives Army Commendation Medal
Maj. John W. Johnson former Petersburg resident and University of Alaska graduate earned the Army Commendation Medal with a third Oak Leaf cluster for heroism in Vietnam. During a January 31 Hue operation he organized a recovery party and tended wounded Marines while under fire before evacuating the casualties. His family resides in Juneau and Fairbanks.
