Mrs. Petra Wasvick Dies in Oregon at 74
Petra Wasvick died suddenly Wednesday at her home in Boring Oregon aged 74. She was born in Norway and came to Petersburg in 1924, moving to Oregon in 1957. Survived by son Arnold and wife, daughters Lu Hudson Julia Beals and Clara Glass, a sister Laura Nielsen, 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Services set for Monday July 3 with memorials to Lutheran Sunday School Building Fund.

Walter Kirkness of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game reported 900,000 to one million red salmon landed in Naknek Kvichak on opening day, about 1100 per boat, with other regions like Egegik and Kodiak also showing robust activity. Emergency regulations extend fishing time and reduce closed areas based on weir counts. Southeast Alaska mirrored the trend with notable landings around Inian Islands Att Point Adolphus and Upper Chatham, while Icy Strait saw fewer seiners. Canneries in Petersburg area began operations, and overall first-week catches were about 60 percent pinks and 40 percent chums. Final counts will await all slips. Next week adds more openings across SE Alaska. West Coast seining extends to Saturdays.

Baby Dies In Wrangell Fire Fatal Alaska blaze claims infant death
Wrangell Alaska sees its third fire death this month as three month old Elizabeth Ann Larsen dies from injuries from a home fire believed sparked by three Larsen children playing with matches. George Larsen and widow were away when the blaze began around 11 am. The mother survived with other children. Elizabeth died at the doctor’s clinic.

Cancer Drive Closes Today in Petersburg

A baby girl was born Tuesday June 27 at Heteraburg General Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Cook. The newborn weighed seven pounds thirteen ounces at birth.
Alaska approves five tax increases in 1961 session
Tax hikes set to raise about 3.64 million dollars annually with changes in gasoline, vehicle registration, cigarette, wine and liquor taxes. The changes take effect July 6 for some items and July 7 for others, with individual net income tax rising from 14 to 16 percent of federal liability.

Three crewmen including Neal MacDonald plead guilty to illegal use of a purse seine in closed Gut Bay waters. Vessel Jan(e)al owned by MacDonald was seized by Alaska game officers. MacDonald fined 3500, 360 day jail with 1 year suspend. two other crew members fined 1000 with 240 day suspended jail. Two minors not charged.

Mr and Mrs Richard Brennan returned to Petersburg last week via the Stikine River route after a three week trip visiting relatives in British Columbia Washington and Oregon They drove from Vancouver BC to Telegraph Creek BC in six days slight variation in time but estimate three and a half days for the journey They shipped their pickup truck to Wrangell on the Ritchie Transportation Company riverboat which later delivered it to Petersburg The couple visited a daughter Judy Brennan in Portland and Mrs Brennan's sister in Vancouver BC
