The Juneau mine strike continues with rioting as several hundred workers headed to the mine office were stopped by union members. Tear gas dispersed the crowd and five men were hospitalized with injuries. Seventeen arrests have been reported and a mediation board is to be appointed by President Roosevelt and Labor Secretary Perkins.
A Senate hearing reviewed letters and a telegram from Matanuska settlers led by Patrick Hemmer and Mrs. I M Sandvik, urging faster building of homes schools and roads and better medical facilities. Lawrence Westbrook cited lumber delays from Seattle due to a strike, while Harry Hopkins reported three weeks behind schedule but promised winter readiness and no serious illness besides measles and chicken pox.
Charles Jackson, longtime Petersburg resident, drowned Sunday evening near the red buoy where Wrangell Narrows empties into Frederick Sound while hand trolling. Ed Michaelson rescued him, but he died en route to the hospital. Burial was Wednesday after Salvation Army services led by Captain Moore, with sister Mrs Chester Worthington among survivors. his wife Christine died last March.
The Department of Commerce Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce released an enlarged edition of its short wave log. The 8 by 10 inch, 138 page directory lists about 2400 world stations and includes World Time Zones and foreign pronunciations. Copies are 25 cents at the Seattle District Office, Federal Office Building.
Ole Ekrem and Erling Johansen return from a three day fishing trip to Castle River. They traveled to the river mouth then up to the head, battling a leaky skiff and persistent mosquitoes. After cooking, sleeping under netting, and mice on the camp, they caught forty cutthroat trout.
The Petersburg Library recently subscribed to News Weekly and joined the Literary Guild to receive a new book each month. It has added sixty new titles to its shelves, including The King's Minion, Diana, The Young Mrs. Greeley, Cavalier of Tennessee, Quiet Cities, Mr. Commissioner Sanders, The Story of Julian, The Light Shines Through, Omoo, Todays Virtue and Skyscraper.
The Petersburg Liquor Store will open July 1 in the remodeled store across from the Post Office. Jimmy Wheeler, son of Councilman Wheeler, is the proprietor and will offer high grade liquors and wines. Previously he managed Wheeler Drug Store in Wrangell.
Telegram from Mrs. G York reports Miss Bertha Lero a Petersburg school teacher underwent a major operation this morning at the Swedish Hospital in Seattle. The wire said the operation was successful and Miss Lero was resting comfortably.
Neil Heard publisher of the Alaska Labor Dispatch and secretary of the Mine Workers Union was found guilty of libel. He was fined two hundred dollars and sentenced to four months in jail with the jail term suspended for good behavior. He is reportedly serving the sentence for nonpayment of the fine. The case stemmed from an editorial on the miners vote to return to work and alleged payoffs per vote. Senator Henry Rodent defended Heard.
Yesterday Congress approved a resolution extending nuisance taxes for two years in line with a Roosevelt administration goal. The plan to tax America's wealthy more heavily has slowed but the President remains insistent on its passage.
National guardsmen remain on duty in Tacoma as ten mills resume operations. Picket lines are dispersed and the Pacific Northwest lumber industry tie up appears to be broken.
New York report states Joe Louis of Detroit technical knockout Primo Carnera in the sixth round of their heavyweight bout. Louis dominated the fight and had Carnera helpless when the referee stopped it. Plans discuss a bout with Max Baer during the week of the world series.
ES Perkins, mine owner and former newspaper publisher, met in Petersburg aboard his yacht El Primero. He has long pursued gypsum development on Chichagof Island and now seeks production. His firm holds an option on two freight and passenger steamers for Alaskan trade to support shipments and a Puget Sound to Southeast Alaska service at uniform rates. Perkins’ steam driven yacht travels at 17 knots and is 137 feet long.
Charles Darwell, longtime owner of Wrangell’s telephone system and local figure, was found unconscious on a telephone pole Friday afternoon. He died at Bishop Rowe General Hospital at 5 o’clock without regaining consciousness.
Mrs James Mason died Wednesday after a monthlong illness at age twenty five. She is survived by her husband, her parents Mr and Mrs Willis, and two children aged three years and one month. Services were held at the Salvation Army church by Captain Moore, with burial at the old cemetery across the harbor.
Residents at Sandy Beach enjoyed informal weekend gatherings for Midsummer last Saturday. At Scow Bay Packing Company mess hall Mr and Mrs Oscar Nicholson hosted a more centralized event with dancing and dining featuring Norwegian dishes.
Alm Gribble and Rodney Ellis were married Wednesday at the commissioner’s office. Ellis will leave for Seldovia to seine during the season. The new Mrs. Ellis graduated from Petersburg High School this year.
About eighty friends honored Mrs. Rasmus Enge on her seventy fifth birthday last Tuesday. The couple returned from a theater show to a lighted, festive home where dancing, singing, and food followed. Informal speeches by Rasmus Enge Mayor Ladcken and Jas. H. Wheeler recalled Petersburg’s early days and Enge’s pioneering fishing business and saltery.
Committees have drafted a full day program for Peters burgs Fourth of July events beginning at 10 A M with a parade. The American Legion hosts a pre event dance at the school gym the proceeds aiding the local Boy Scout movement. Activities include contests for all ages and a 6 PM wrestling match. The day ends with the firemen's Ball at 10 P M and a Native Dance at Sales Inn.
