The Petersburg Press will publish one day early next week due to the Fourth of July holiday. The Thursday edition enables staff to finish mail and give advertisers and shoppers a final shopping paper before the holiday. Grocery store specials will run on Friday. A full Fourth of July program appears in next week’s issue.
Metlakatla requests a preliminary injunction set for Tuesday June 30 to block enforcement of Alaska fish trap bans. The action involves Metlakatla and two other villages Kake and Angoon with Metlakatla arguing its traps sit on a reservation while Kake and Angoon do not. Attorney A H Zeigler represents Metlakatla.
Waterfront observers note near blank days with some life near Indian Pass and a midweek surge as boats tally thousands of pounds. Area 2 closing remains unannounced with a clipping from last season and river run totals for Areas 2 and 3A 3B showing activity different from 1958. Names of vessels and buyers appear with tonnage figures for various boats and districts.
Court records show Gabriel Lorvig and William Jackson charged with drunk and disorderly conduct while Jonas Halingstad and A Pete Varness faced disorderly conduct charges. Deputy Marshal Dale Miller transported Braxton Lee Boyd to Juneau to answer six counts of issuing checks without funds. Boyd, who arrived from New York in April, stayed at Five Mile.
Petersburg Mayor Lew Williams requests suitable permanent housing for two city light plant workers. The light superintendent and Mrs C V Shay need an apartment, while Mr and Mrs K M Doddie and their three children require a house. Interested renters should contact the men at the city light plant or call the city clerk.
Mostly cloudy conditions expected this weekend with light rain or showers. Temperatures to run near normal from 45 to 75 degrees with recent highs of 71 and a low of 43. Rain accumulation stands at 0.64 inches in the past week as of morning observations.
A son named Jon Greggory was born last Friday at Petersburg General Hospital weighing seven pounds eight and a half ounces. The Sarbers reside in Juneau where Dave works for Alaska Coastal Airlines and plan to move the family there. Judy Randrup is referenced as Mrs Larber.
Judge Kelly denied a temporary restraining order against state laws blocking fish traps used by Kake and Angoon, while scheduling a hearing on a permanent injunction next Monday. The ruling maintains state authority amid a federal rule dispute over trap sites and pending criminal actions related to Kake traps.
Fourth of July parade committee reports several float entries received and urges all entrants to check in by next Wednesday July 1. Parade starts at 11 a.m. from the PAF cannery hill with judging at 10:30 a.m. entrants must arrive 30 minutes early. Mrs Anne Lund coordinates groups and children costumes and line placement.
Mr and Mrs Bue Hentze report a moose sighting while driving on Mit koff highway between Papke's landing turn off and Fall Creek bridge about two weeks ago. They thought they saw a man, then a small donkey, and later recognized a moose calf before the animal wandered into the woods.
Malcolm Peel of the Presbyterian Church will run swimming life saving courses this summer. The program includes a children class for seven years and older a separate adult class and junior and senior certificates. Courses target proficient swimmers with locations at Blind Slough and the Rotary Sports pool and dates to be announced after enrolment.
Dr. and Mrs. J Earl Jackman of New York lead a party of about 35 Presbyterians arriving by charter flight after 1 p.m. for a three hour visit to the church. They will be hosted at a tea by the Sarah Magill Missionary Society and receive escorts from local parishioners. Dr Jackman heads Alaskan work for the Board of National Missions and has led several annual Alaska tours.
Community notice announces an ANS Dance event on Saturday June 27 at the Sons of Norway hall with plans for live music and broad public attendance. The brief invites local residents to join the evening event and enjoy a social gathering.
Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Dave Klein urges residents to not capture fawns this week, noting mothers are nearby and fawns fare better in the woods. Three fawns have been brought in so far and will likely be used by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for research.
The Senate passed legislation extending the life of the Alaska International Rail and Highway Commission and sent it to the President for signature. It requires the commission to report recommendations to Congress by June 1, 1961 and adds a requirement for one Alaska congressional member on its membership.
Dr Huston St Clair president of Jewell Ridge Corp and Coal Company of Alaska said exploration plans for the Bering River Coal Field in Alaska are moving forward. He cited federal acreage expansion needs and urged swift action on S 1728 and HR 6939 to enable field work and testing. Jewell Ridge Coal Corp based in Tazewell Virginia is a leading coal producer and exporter.
Enrollment for Lutheran Vacation Bible School reached 61 this week under Rev. Joseph A. Imithro superintendent. The program runs Monday to Friday 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. with a closing program on July 3 at 7 p.m. Sessions target fourth grade and up. another August session will serve younger children. Staff includes six teachers and four helpers: Mrs. Royal Duval, Mrs. Walter Dawson, Mrs. Adolph Mathisen, and Miss Joan Peterson.
Two Petersburg youths pleaded guilty to damaging the Sandy Beach area last Sunday. Police arrested Jerry Wooton and Leslie Reid after a party left beer bottles and cans scattered around. Wooton received a 150 dollar fine with 60 day suspended sentence. Reid was fined 100 dollars with 60 days suspended, both suspended on restoring the shelter.
Forest fires scorch over 40 000 acres across interior and western Alaska with some outbreaks still out of control. Six new lightning sparked fires reported in Black River country northeast of Fort Yukon. Two fires near Idatrarod burn 16 000 plus acres, while 2 000 acres burn near McGrath and Hughes.
Neil Murray of Ketchikan joins Fryer Machine Works as head of automatic transmission repairs. Murray has been in Petersburg several weeks and Fryer will handle all auto repair in its shop.
Mr and Mrs Fred Nelson prominent former Petersburg residents travel from California. Mr Nelson served as Standard Oil Co agent in Petersburg for many years.

A group of thirteen couples and three children depart Roche Harbor in small cruisers bound for Juneau Alaska to attend the July 4 statehood celebration. The Venette family traveled 3200 miles by road to join the trip, with participants from Thermopolis Wyoming Fango North Carolina California Washington and others.
Mrs. A J Trones and her daughter Paula Thompson returned to Petersburg after Paula's graduation from North Thurston High School in Olympia. Miss Thompson graduated fifth in her class. Irene Albright visited as a guest at the Trones home. Brian Hardy age ten will spend the summer with the Trones before returning to Beach North Dakota this fall.

Alaska officials announce renewal of a month to month contract with Morningside Hospital to care for state mental patients. A longer 4 to 5 year proposal was rejected to keep flexibility and avoid private patient influx during transition. Plans include a future Valdez facility and a psychiatric treatment center in Anchorage with bids by year end.
A public welcome service will be held this week at the Salvation Army chapel to honor Lt. Lou Webb who is coming from San Francisco to be the assistant corps officer. He has attended the Salvation Army Officers Training School the last nine months. A reception follows the service with Alaska slides, and Sunday school begins at 10:00 with Capt. Lynch urging punctual attendance.

Biologist Harry Merriam has arrived in Petersburg to join the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. He will work in the Petersburg area under the federal aid program alongside Dave Klein at ADFG.
