George Sundborg resigns as general manager of the Alaska Development Board after heading the agency since 1946 and says he will pursue other work in the Territory. The report notes concurrent items from Washington and Anchorage including Dean's farewell news conference and an unprecedented Anchorage heat record.
Col. James Crockett, Alaska director of civilian defense, arrives Monday to help weld local unit into a stronger organization. Local director Kenneth Welde has resigned. C A Krantz takes over. Crockett will stay Monday night and speak at the Chamber of Commerce dinner hosted by Mayor Wilder and President Lillian Swanson urges all members to attend.
Governor Heintzleman announced the appointment of W A Chipperfield of Juneau as Alaska Land Commissioner when the Department of Public Lands becomes effective August 1. Chipperfield, head of the U S Forest Service lands section in Alaska for seven years, will retire June 30 after 38 years of service. He is noted for his leadership in Petersburg division and is regarded as experienced in lands work though taxation is possible exception.
The Fish and Wildlife Service announces local sales of hunting and fishing licenses at the FWS offices. Licensing officer A. P. Wasvick handles sales including 1954 fiscal year licenses, which become valid July 1. Copies of 1954 game law regulations are available, and territorial sport fishing stamps may also be purchased from Wasvick.
Fourth of July program features a 15 mile outboard handicap race from Kaylor-Dahl to P A F and the Narrows with a standing start. Heats July 3 at Kayser-Dahl cannery determine numbers, prizes 25 dollars. Ronald Snelling speaker. parade address follows. Libby vs P A F tug of war and band music planned.
Alaska conducted an atomic training exercise with mock attacks on Juneau Anchorage Cordova and Fairbanks. Reports cited 5142 fictitious casualties and extensive damage while Col. Crockett credited the Alaska Road Commission and other agencies for the exercise’s success.
Mr. Strickland and Q L DeBoer traveled to Juneau aboard the Alaska Coastal flight on Wednesday.
The Fourth of July Committee will meet at the Pastime cafe on Monday June 29 at 7 30 p m. Chairman Ben Smith urges everyone to attend.

Public Land Order 899 signed June 15 by Regional Forester A W Greeley places Elfin Cove and part of the Kake Townsite into public land status. Elfin Cove covers about 80 acres including the village of around 100 residents. The Kake area spans 122 acres along Keku Strait with homes, gardens, a crab cannery and a salmon cannery.
A special Daughters of Norway meeting is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday July 1 at the Sons of Norway hall.
W. Downing, Fred Biggerstaff and Q.L. DeBoer flew in from Juneau on Thursday, adding to a group of visitors expected to tour regional sites this week.
The week shows a high of 72 degrees on June 25 and a low of 44 on June 20 with 0.02 inches of precipitation. In 1952 the high reached 62 on June 23 and the low 43 on June 19 with 0.10 inches of rain.
Installation of new officers of Women of the Moose will be held on Monday evening, June 29, at 8:30 at the Moose hall. Friends and members of the L.O.CO.M. are invited to attend. The installation committee consists of Frances Nore as installing regent, Alda Bennett as installation chair, Gertrude Gribble and Gerda Olsen as guides, Helen Anderson as installation chaplain, Bertha Philbin as installing guide, and Eleanore Thomasseri as installing pianist.
Members and friends of Petersburg Presbyterian Church host a party for 20 travelers from across the country on a mission study seminar in Alaska. Dr J Earl Jackman will lead, with Rev Ronald Snelling as hosts, aboard a Pan American flight en route to multiple missions sites including Metlakatla Sitka Wrangell and Barrow. They depart Seattle July 12 after touring southeast Alaska.
Territorial sport fishing license stamps for 1953 54 are on sale through the Territory at the Department of Taxation offices in Juneau Ketchikan Anchorage Fairbanks and Nome and at leading hardware and sport centers resorts where licenses are sold. In Petersburg they may be bought from A P Wasvick. All persons sixteen years of age and over except Indians Eskimos and Aleuts must hold a license before fishing in salt or fresh water. Licenses are subject to inspection and failure to procure and exhibit them is a misdemeanor with possible fines up to 100 or imprisonment up to six months or both and license forfeiture.

Leon D. Spencer of R W Beck and Associates outlined plans for selling bonds for a new hydro electric project in Petersburg within the next year. He is compiling a prospectus with city records showing growth and future prospects, including pictures of local businesses homes and public institutions.

The Fish and Wildlife Service in Juneau clarifies that salmon trollers may sell halibut caught incidentally while trolling only in areas open to halibut fishing. Halibut from closed areas may not be sold. Tarleton F. Smith received the telegram detailing these rules.
The Sheldon can nery operated for years by the Sheldons burned to its steel hull in Juneau last Saturday afternoon after being towed there in March. It sat near Salmon Creek, used for shrimp canning by Kayler- Dahl until June 1 when lease expired and no insurance was held. The fire, likely started by tar on a roof, left the building a total loss by 6:30 p.m. Dahl flew to Juneau with his daughter Clara Lesher for the incident.
Alaska scout executive Mau rice F. Powers announced his resignation and a transfer to San Francisco California. Since March 1948 he led the Alaska program tripling membership doubling funding adding two camps and expanding staff from three to five. He directed camps across the Territory and led four of five explorer camps. A successor arrives about July 1.
Nine Alaska localities will host hearings on 1954 commercial fishery regulations with meetings in Seattle after the Alaska schedule. Dillingham August 1 Kodiak September 18 Anchorage September 21 Cordova September 23 Ketchikan October 12 Wrangell October 14 Petersburg October 15 Sitka October 19 Juneau October 21 and Seattle November 4 5 6. Written views must be received by November 20 directed to the Director Fish and Wildlife Service Washington DC.

Sitka negotiations over 1953 salmon prices are stalled as AFL fishermen and union representatives request a recess. Earliest season opening since 1947 reported in Eastern Western and Icy Straits districts with about 25 seiners active. Proposals circulated by Alaska Fish and Wildlife Service and Salmon Industry officials suggest prices well below last year, including 40 cents for pinks 60 cents for chums 80 cents for cohoes and 1.05 dollars for reds.
The Eis enhower administration wins a major test by allowing House floor debate on a bill to extend the excess profits tax. The rules committee bypassed the Ways and Means Committee led by Daniel Reed of New York, prompting Reed to call the action a grab for power. If Congress does not extend the levy, it will die next Tuesday.
C S Engineers will negotiate next Monday June 29 in a meeting of cold storage plant representatives. The session aims to discuss the 1953 contract with operating engineers. Representatives include Mendenhall Johnson Ganty Rutherford George Hall Dahl and Gay from Engineers Local 843 Seattle.
Ellis Air Line carried H. Wick and Ken W. Burke to Juneau Thursday. Dr. and Mrs. SC. Eastwold and Mr. Downing flew to Ketchikan the same day.
