City Manager Mel Cross announced the portable four cell jail from St. Louis should arrive near July’s end. The $18,000 unit includes holding room for juveniles and separate cells for drunks and maximum security with plumbing and wiring to be installed at the municipal shops.
A series of earthquakes struck Fairbanks Alaska causing evacuations of business buildings, a hospital and a jail. No injuries or major structural damage were reported though chimneys fell and power lines snapped. The strongest shocks reached 6.7 to 7 on the Richter scale with the epicenter near Fairbanks.
Petersburg Chamber of Commerce plans an old fashioned Fourth of July with costumes and historical touches. Miss Petersburg contest on July 3 selects a candidate for Miss Alaska with a $200 scholarship and trip to Anchorage. Grand prize skiff and motor donated by Peters burg Fisheries Inc. and Peters burg Cold Storage Co. Firemen’s Dance July 2 at the Elks. water events, parade at 11 a.m., booths and fireworks finale.
Softball teams from Rivers Construction Co and the Harbor Bar clash at 2 p.m. Sunday. The winner will face Kite's Kave's representatives the following Sunday in a second contest.
