Anchorage Republicans seek federal probe of state hiring
Three Anchorage Republicans wired Governor Egan urging an investigation into personnel hiring practices at the state department of public works. Rep. Bruce Kendall Henry Pratt and Rep. Wm Saunders also asked the U S House public works committee to probe highway contract irregularities in Alaska. Governor Egan dismissed the wires as based on politics not facts and said non Alaskans were hired only when qualified Alaskans were unavailable. State highway director T D Sherard requested engineer Laurence Heathcock resign after reports of a New Mexico highway department scandal and testimony a contractor linked Heathcock to involvement there.

Little Found Innocent Mental Hearing Likely
A Washington jury found Bruce Little 33 not guilty by reason of insanity in the shotgun death of his brother Lee Little. Lee, formerly of Petersburg, was killed March 20 at a Littlerock home. The jury ruled Bruce Little not safe to be at large and a mental commitment hearing will be held with date yet to be set.

Plans Dropped for Juneau Pulp Mill
Georgia Pacific Corp. has dropped plans to build a pulp and paper plant in Alaska. The company will further expand its Samoa California facilities. In 1955 the firm won a preliminary timber award on Admiral Ty Island near Juneau and received a three year extension in 1958. President James L. Buckley said it would not be economical to build a mill in Alaska at this time.

The U S Weather Bureau reports unsettled weekend weather with rain and gusty southeast winds, becoming partly cloudy with scattered showers and diminishing winds between storms.
