Curlew Damaged Near Pt Colpoys After Rock Collision
The Petersburg halibut vessel Curlew ran aground a mile south of Pt Colpoys Tuesday night at 11 30. Crew members Andy Bojer Oscar Wikan Chris Olson and others huddled in the cold until 4 30 am before a passing boat spotted them. The Curlew carried about 38 000 pounds of halibut en route to Ketchikan and had its radiotelephone tuned to a channel. The Puget Sound boat Menace spotted the marooned ship and aided by bringing in about 8 000 pounds of its load and notifying the Coast Guard. Coast Guard cutters and nearby vessels responded to assist. Repairs were made with oil drums and the Curlew was towed to town Thursday morning, now at Milkof Marine Ways for possible repairs. The incident mirrors a prior reef collision involving the White Holly last year. About five other vessels have struck the unlighted reef on Prince of Wales Island north end.

Funeral Held for Ammea Miller 52 in Petersburg
Mrs. Ammea Miller 52 died after a long illness. Funeral services were at the Lutheran Church with Rev. J. A. Luthro. Born in Harstad Norway 1907 she came to the United States in 1916 with her parents. She lived in Petersburg most of her life and married L C Miller in 1933. Survived by husband two daughters and siblings. Pallbearers were her brothers Adolph Aril Leif Marvin Kvernvik and Don Nelson.

Alaska Names Gatz and Winsor to New State Departments
Gov. William A. Egan names Peter Gatz of Fairbanks and Paul Winsor of Anchorage to lead the new Alaska state revenue and health and welfare departments. Petersburg's Fourth of July queen will join Petersburg and Alaska town queens at Seattle Seafair the first week of August. The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce accepted the invitation. Gov. Egan activated Alaska State Supreme Court steps by asking the Judicial Council to nominate candidates for three justice vacancies. The six member panel, three lawyers and three laymen, will meet later this month and submit a list by early July. Egan will appoint the justices. Southeast Alaska will not add salmon pack totals yet as up north figures suggest limited fishing. After two weeks western and central Alaska reported 35 590 cases, below last year’s 52 251. Log export rules rewritten by U S Forest Service Alaska region
The U S Forest Service in Juneau announced revised Alaska log export policy based on timber volumes quality and new pulp mill capacity in southeast Alaska and Wrangell and Juneau. Primary manufacture rules for sawmill logs now allow export after breaking logs to resawn sizes with common equipment while preserving use of logs for pulp and other finished products.
