Washington reports a major Pacific air engagement over Guadalcanal with US planes downing 77 Japanese aircraft. Japanese losses reached 32 bombers and 45 Zeros, a 13 to 1 US victory, with some planes or pilots possibly missing. Venturia medium bombers also hit Kiska.
A new itinerant welfare worker Miss Delphina Morris will travel throughout the First Division assisting communities with welfare problems. She will advise on personal difficulties child behavior and delinquency prevention. Morris trained at University of Chicago School of Social Work and has worked in Chicago Kansas City Lincoln and Topeka. She plans to return to Petersburg in ten to twelve weeks.
The OPA announced a 30 cent per quart increase in blended whiskey prices to cover higher imported neutral spirits costs. The rise takes effect June 24 and applies despite ample straight whiskey stocks. Neutral spirits, comprising up to 72 percent of blends, are not aged and are produced as needed by distillers with surplus neutral spirits available in Cuba.
The Senate appropriations committee added 198,365 dollars to the Interior Department bill for Alaska mineral resources study, increasing funding by 124,365 dollars. The move signals expanded scrutiny of Alaska's mineral resources by federal authorities.
Duncan McDonald, who operates a fur farm on Sokolof Island near Wrangell, sailed from there for Seattle aboard a recent boat trip.

Charles W McKee died June 12 at the local hospital after years of ill health. Born September 21 1867 in Stevenson County Illinois he moved to Alaska twenty years ago settling in West Petersburg. Surviving are sons Mark Ketchikan Pierce Chicago and daughter Marie Salt Lake City. Services at 7 pm at the Catholic Church conducted by Father Hoch followed by burial in Petersburg cemetery.
Ankara reports the frontier with Syria was reopened yesterday by the British after a 48 hour suspension of traffic across the border except for Allied diplomatic and military personnel.
Application made for priority to purchase a new sterilizer for Petersburg General Hospital. Equipment to be bought is a 16 by 24 inch censor to replace old equipment. details incomplete.
The nurse leaders and the Nurses Aide committee met to discuss the nursing program and showed strong understanding of all Red Cross activities in town. Miss Edwards, cited for her Red Cross work, left Thursday for Wrangell to continue her duties.
Mrs I M Dahl directs the younger 4-H Victory Garden group with Anna Elkins assisting in West Petersburg. Twenty four members join Uncle Sam's 4-H Garden Club, with many named youths listed. Older gardeners run their own officers. records of work value products and expenses determine end season awards. Local support from Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club funds prizes and fall exhibit exhibits.
Myrile Cornelius departs for the south to pursue purchases for Mercantile Seattle, seeking new suppliers and store stock. The trip aims to expand merchandise options and secure favorable terms with regional dealers.
The governor completed a three week inspection trip in the Aleutian Islands spending several days on Attu Island and flying over Kiska Island. He returned with a captured Japanese flag presented by the Attu Island commanding general as a souvenir of the visit.

Colonel A. R. MacKechnie brother of J. L. MacKechnie received the Silver Star for gallantry in New Guinea operations on March 31 1943. His night and day recon missions 65 miles from the area helped his task force capture and secure the sector without a loss, awarded by order of Maj. Gen. Fuller.
London reports a jittery Rome radio broadcast saying a large British force concentrates along the southern Turkey frontier. Axis stations boast of Allied force concentrations in the Mediterranean and promise to reveal landing attempts. Goebbels editorial urges critics to keep quiet amid Germany's perceived war gains.
About a thousand Seabees arrived from Alaska and the Aleutians in Oakland. They formed the Fourth Battalion, first to depart and to finish a year of hard work. They spoke of the cold as their main hardship while detailing a diver’s peril at sea and an octopus incident during bottom operations.
Harold Townsend, former chief of supply and transportation for the Poston relocation center in Arizona, testified to a Dies congressional subcommittee that detainees stored bread and other food for invasion paratroopers. The testimony described cache behavior and food supplies at the center.
Herve Jorgensen, employed at the Cold Storage plant, fell 20 feet from an ice chute while cleaning ice. He suffered a broken ankle and chest injuries, was unconscious briefly, and was hospitalized in stable condition after craw ling to seek help. He was discovered by fellow workers and received prompt medical care.
Allied Liberators from Middle East bases bombed Sicilian airfields Comiso and Biscari by daylight. Night attacks by RAF and North Africa air forces hit Naples docks. About 50 Liberators, with Malta Spitfires, dropped 125 tons of explosives on two airfields and dispersal areas. Large black smoke rose as planes returned.
Chinese army spokesman reports about 40,000 Japanese killed or wounded in the 40 day battle for the upper Yangtze River. Fewer than two thirds of the invaders escaped the Chinese counteroffensive.
Los Angeles June 18 AP Dies subcommittee traveled to Poston Arizona to investigate the Japanese relocation center. The hearing ended with American Civil Liberties Union spokesman A L Wirin demanding the loyalty of Japanese Americans and urging Congressional probes into American Legion activities alleged to stir race prejudice in Southern California. Director Clinton Taft urged Japanese access to coastal beaches if allowed.
