In our opinion the act of two students who lowered the U S flag and raised a Russian flag is a serious treasonous incident not a prank. We fault Dr Moore for lax handling and demand the prankster be publicly named, arguing students must take responsibility and leadership should set a firm standard.
As of June 13, a new Reconstruction Finance Corporation policy is in effect in western Washington excluding Wahkaikum Cowlitz Clark and Skamania counties plus Kittitas and all Alaska. Loans approved will be publicized the week after approval. H Sanford Saari Seattle Loan agency manager says the policy tightens lending but urges small business to seek help when entitled. The aim is to ensure proper loans and avoid unwarranted ones.
The celebration executive board led by chairman will meet Wednesday evening at 7 30 at the Recreation to consider plans for the Fourth of July. Phil Jerauld of the Jaycees serves as board head with representatives from most men’s organizations in town.

A batch of Miss Freda Larson's new children's book Glad Lee the Cross-Eyed Bear arrived at Norma Shop. The first shipment of 16 copies sold quickly with autographs from the author who taught at the Trading Union. The mimeographed Christmas story from 1949 evolved into a printed volume with Bunji Tagawa illustrations. This adds the Petersburg author to Alaska's publishing peers.
University president Dr Terris Moore described the May 21 commencement flag incident as a student prank. For the third straight year Jaycees win the fishing derby with Ben Smith weighing a 15 pound 2 ounce king salmon as the top catch. Ed Cedergren briefly sparked hope with a king but he is not a Jaycee. The trophy may stay with the Chamber after a vote to give them another chance.
An Associated Press report says Dr. Russell Smith, a Wisconsin physician with a $75,000 firearms collection, will arrive in Alaska tonight with Mrs. Smith. He will practice in the Lindstrom building, bring a hunter’s hobby, and plans to add a second doctor later to ensure on call care.
Dr R Harrison plans a trip to Alaska then to Mt Edgecombe en route to Petersburg. Friends report he cannot stop in Petersburg as Department of Health directs direct travel to Juneau then Mount Edgecombe. He looks forward to seeing everyone in Petersburg.
National Guard officers visiting locally said a Peters burg unit could form after a June 28 meeting. They noted progress with units at Skagway and interest in Kake, and explained drill pay, encampment pay, and required armory training.
Members of Northern Light chapter Order of Eastern Star plan the annual picnic Sunday afternoon June 17 at Sandy Beach. The dinner is pot luck with coffee kolache and tea provided. Visiting Stars are welcome and rides can be arranged by calling 39-12 before Sunday noon. The event starts at 1 p.m.

Miss Lillian Swanson praised townspeople at a Chamber of Commerce meeting for NEA banquet success. She cited salmon and halibut donors, shellfish boat crews, crab gatherer Clarence Olson, and others who contributed without charge. Earl N. Ohmer lauded all helpers, and the chamber gave a standing vote of thanks to Swanson.
Vacation Bible School at the Lutheran church ended with a children’s program last Friday evening. The four divisions performed songs and readings led by Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Nicker, Mrs. Gillenwater, Mrs. Oines, Mrs. Duval, Pastor Hopp, and Mrs. Hopp. A projector and screen were dedicated as a memorial for Louis Martens. Sixty three certificates were awarded to participants.
A regular Garden Club meeting is set for Thursday at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Earl Nickerson. Members will discuss upcoming projects and garden plans.
Clara Dahl, a college attendee from New York City, was among passengers on an incoming plane that experienced an incident Thursday afternoon authorities report. Further details on her condition or the flight are not yet released.

On June 9 Louis Miller Sr marked his 90th birthday in Petersburg with quiet greetings at home due to Mrs Miller’s illness. The evening featured a dinner with his son in law and daughter Frederick and wife, plus Lt Frederick L Nelson and his bride visiting from California for a brief honeymoon.
Mrs Ernie Sarff president of Alaska Ameri can Legion Auxiliary returned home Wednesday after a two week absence. She traveled to Juneau to visit her son in law and daughter and to meet members of a new auxiliary unit in Haines expected to form by July 4. She also visited a Skagway unit, about two years old, and went to Hoonah where a unit is forming. A Auk Bay picnic brought together Auk Bay Legion members and the new unit awaiting its charter this fall.
