Forest Fires Strike Petersburg and Wrangell in Alaska
Forest fires erupted Sunday in the Petersburg and Wrangell areas of southeastern Alaska. The Wrangell blaze along the Wrangell Highway was contained within hours, while the Petersburg fire near the Fall Creek bridge burned about 100 acres and required stock and Wright road crew support until 1:30 a.m. Strong warm, dry weather has fueled the season’s first fires in this region in over two years. A second blaze near Muskeag burned about a mile from the Mitkof Highway with ranger supervision starting today.

Major Edward Locken reports from Captain J H Ingram that the U S S Litchfield and two divisions of ships will visit Alaskan ports from July 22 to August 3. Nine ships plus squadron staff will tour Petersburg and Ketchikan with limited shore leave for about 60 officers and 1,000 sailors. Some ships will stay July 26 to 28 in Petersburg then move on to maneuvers with occasional additional visits anticipated.
