The Alaska Steamship Company freighter Lakina was blocked from unloading at Steamboat Bay Waterfall and other ports as a picket line by the Alaska Salmon Purse Seiners Union pressed a twenty percent trap reduction. Supplies remained on board.
R O Peters aged 42 recalls the Vernon Castle airplane crash of February 15 1918 after viewing film images at a Long Beach cinema. Peters was the survivor and his student companion was seriously injured in the same wreck.
Lloyd A. Morley is appointed Sanitarian for the Territorial Department of Health to replace E. F. Clements who resigns to enter private business in Juneau. Morley, with the Washington Department of Health since 1936, holds a BSc in Bacteriology and an MS in Bacteriology and Public Health from Washington State College. he starts June 26.
Elks Lodge invites the public to Flag Day exercises on Tuesday at 8 pm in the Sons of Norway Hall. Dr H H Loy will deliver a historical address Carroll Clausen will recount flag history and George Beck will provide music for the event.
The Petersburg City Council opened its regular session discussing hospital repairs and school building work. They tabled liquor license applications and debated enforcement of liquor laws, motor vehicle safety, and the licensing of power driven vehicles. A proposal to maintain a private access to Citizen's Dock was referred to Public Works.
Lemuel G. Wingard is replaced as Alaska Agent by Seton Thompson who arrived in Seattle to assume duties last weekend. The Commerce Department under Harry Hopkins ordered an investigation of Seattle and Alaska offices, dismissing two minor temporary employees for inefficiencies.
Teddy Tanaka nine year old Japanese boy has been missing since last Wednesday. A $500 reward was posted by his father Ed Tanaka owner of the City Cafe. Longshoremen and city police used drug gear to search Gastineau Channel waters and waterfront areas from dawn till after noon. Ernest LaFollette reported seeing the boy on the upper city float near the main dock at 10 p m Wednesday. The boy was last seen at the baseball park around 7 p m earlier that day.
The Volunteer Fire Department held a meeting to organize Portsmouths Fourth of July celebration. Committees were named for finance decorating parade sports program dance and advertising. Fire Chief Ralph Hall oversaw the dinner with helpers Mrs White and Mrs Israelson, and Hugh Jones received a toy watch as a thank you gift for a broken crystal.
