Juneau reports procedures to block fishing gear certificates from drum seine and reel use. Rubber stamps mark licenses as legal only when not used on drum seine, with state officials inspecting trap sites in Angoon and Kake and noting federal permits for Metlakatla.
May fishing shows strength with all four weeks improving versus the last four seasons. In week ending May 28, kings totaled 2 438 and 48 boats made 111 landings averaging 21 96. Halibut price 175 cents. Halibut landings 34 days 1 378 000 pounds compared to 1 184 300 in 1958. Various boats and cargo activity noted along the coast with Fish and wildlife and bureau officials visiting Petersburg and nearby.
Acting Governor Hugh J. Wade urged appointing an advisory board on banking to advise the new state commissioner of commerce. He noted the State Reorganization Act replaces the old territorial banking board and the commerce department awaits activation and a vacant cabinet post. Wade predicted a 1960 banking code revision and said Alaska would seek higher rates on state deposits, with July 1 as the effective date.
The hospital guild announced this week that the charity box will open Monday for the summer season. Funds support the guild’s work at the hospital. People are urged to donate furniture and clothing they no longer use. items will be sold for a small sum. Reported break in thefts involved the box recently.
Four young ladies enter the Petersburg Fourth of July Queen contest with Diane Lund Joan Peterson Bonnie Enge and Patty Sather sponsored by local groups. A public introduction occurs at the Coliseum Theater as festivities begin. Winners receive prizes including a 10 hp outboard and a Polaroid camera.
Dr. W W Bailey announces a summer replacement for Petersburg patients as Dr. K J White from Albuquerque, New Mexico takes over care while the Bailey family takes a three week southern vacation starting June 15. Office hours start at 9 am with appointments by phone. Dr White has previously assisted in Alaska during summers in Seward and Palmer and maintains a winter practice in New Mexico.
Sp4 Charles McClurken left Petersburg today for Seattle to receive his discharge from the army and the Alaska Communications System. He was accompanied by Mrs. McClurken. He plans to enter Western Washington College of Education in the fall. Sp4 Marvin Balestra arrives from Wrangell to replace him at the Petersburg ACS station.
A new book Coastal Exploration of Washington by Whitebrook joins Petersburg Public Library shelves in a limited edition of 900 copies. Five children's books by Dalch titled Tommy's Pets On the Farm Monkey Friends In the Woods Zoo is Home were added to the library collection.
U S Commissioner united three couples in marriage in recent weeks. Orin Pratt and Mary Evelyn Nore of Wrangell wed May 30 with Thorne Ferguson and Wrangell witness. Stanley Shauqu anie and Alberta Kadake of Kake wed with Benson Kadake witnesses. Harlan Adams and Levina Thomas of Kake wed two weeks ago with James Thomas as witness.
Tampering with mailboxes prompts the Post Office to lock the lobby at night through fall winter and spring. Postmaster Dick Brennan notes it inconveniences many during season and warns that if tampering continues the lobby will be permanently locked to protect the U. S. mails.
James H. Wheeler announced a major property transfer last week as he sold parcels adjacent to Modern Grocery and near the Elks hall to the Hammer and Wikan organization. Art Hammer stated the firm has no immediate development plans for the land.
Mrs. Henrietta Strom, daughter of Mr and Mrs Heinie Dahl, arrived here last Tuesday for a week’s visit with her parents.
The Petersburg Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife office will close July 1 as jurisdiction shifts to the state. Biologist Dave Klein remains in Petersburg as a state employee aided by new recruit Harry Merrean from Washington State College, while Graham and Shoals depart. Merrean joins July 1, with Petersburg reinforced by a second biologist to continue wildlife studies funded by federal aid.
J Lester Miner former Anchorage Superintendent of Schools died suddenly Saturday from a heart attack at a friend's home in Wrangell He was 57 and employed by the Alaska Native Service at Wrangell Institute He served Alaska starting in 1944 in Anchorage before joining ANS He is survived by his wife and two children.
Q Q Quadiagan pleaded guilty before U S Commissioner Vernon Counter on Wednesday and paid a 50 dollar fine. He was alleged to have taken tools belonging to a helicopter mechanic.
Arthur Tognazzini, field representative of the Federal Local Security Office, will be in Petersburg next week on social security business. He will be available to answer questions at the Mitkof Hotel on Thursday May 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Residents of Petersburg urged to contact the social security representative to ensure timely check receipt and file early.

Two new members Barbara Burrell and Genevieve Wanberg were enrolled. installation set for June 29.
Mrs. Gertrude Reeser proprietor of Dora Mae's shop was elected first vice president of the state federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs at the Sitka convention. Petersburg representative Mrs. Reeser attended with Mrs. Noca Wikan and Mrs. Beulah McCutchen.
Weather observer reports gusts up to 60 mph in Petersburg last night. Weekend outlook shows variable clouds with a few showers and morning fog. Temperatures range 42 to 64 degrees. recent high 62, low 34, and 1.97 inches of rain in the past week.
Dr. J. O. Rude, formerly of Petersburg, will address listeners on KINY in Juneau Sunday at 6 15 p m. The program topic is June 7th the Real Norway Liberty Day.
Alaska Bankers Association elected Jaques Roth of Seward as president at its annual convention in Ketchikan. W. T. Kegley of Juneau and Richard Borer of Cordova were named first and second vice presidents. Directors for three years include John Holmberg Anchorage Charles Kidd Sitka William Stroekes Fairbanks and William Moran Ketchikan. The group backed legislation for a unified state bank law and heard remarks from Senator E L Bartlett and Acting Gov Hugh J Wade. Petersburg representatives Ed Locken and J G Taylor attended.
Blaze near Willow Creek 60 miles southwest of McGrath scorched 160 acres before 10 smoke jumpers containment. Six more jumpers later battled a man set fire near Wiseman, securing another small blaze.
Petersburg is named on the itinerary of the first outboard cruiser caravan to Alaska. About twenty boats depart San Juan Islands June 20, stopping at Ketchikan Wrangell Petersburg June 30 and Juneau July 2, with a LeConte Glacier side trip tentatively planned.

JUNEAU The U S Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management urge public cooperation in fire prevention as the season opens. Fires started during land clearing can threaten property. owners may be charged for suppression costs by state law. Violations carry fines, misdemeanor or felony penalties. Follow precautions like building fires on mineral soil, clearing around the fire, ensuring it is dead out, and reporting fires to the nearest district ranger or BLM office. The 1958 season saw many fires from human carelessness in Southeastern Alaska.
A new act signed by Governor Egan increases Alaska driver license fees from 2.00 to 3.00 dollars and extends license validity to two years. The junior and special permits rise to 2.00 dollars. Renewals after May 18 must include the higher fee. Suspended licenses returnable after expiry, with exam rules depending on suspension length. Parental liability for minors on licenses remains, with insurance proof relieving responsibility.
Ernestine Veatch, Sitka Daily Sentinel managing editor, was elected chairman of the Alaska Associated Press Members Assn at its third annual convention. She succeeds Richard Peter of KINY and KINY-TV. Cliff Cernick of Fairbanks Daily News Miner was elected newspapers vice chairman. R D Jensen of KTKN and KATV was named broadcasters vice chairman. Sitka was chosen as the 1960 convention city. Lew Williams Jr. attended for Petersburg Press.
