The Petersburg post office moves to a remodeled Hagerman and Longworth building starting Monday June 6. 675 boxes available in the new lobby compared with 564 before, with temporary service windows and a future plan to use the old lobby for permanent windows after July 1.
Mrs Roy Sokol opens a cancer crusade in Petersburg with a house to house canvass planned next Monday evening to raise funds. Volunteers include Vera Donouf e Alice Stafford Mildred Stewart Myrtis Fryer Frances Phillips Sigurd Medalen and many others who will complete the canvass by late next week.
Arthur H. Tveten about 50 died May 16 in Vacaville California from cancer. He owned or worked in several papers including Petersburg Press and later positions in Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau and Seattle. Survived by wife children brother Paul and two sisters. His death was reported by A O Heimdahl in Everett to his son Norman.
Alaska Coastal, Ellis, and Pacific Northern announce summer schedules for SE Alaska and Seattle routes. Pacific Northern adds two daily trips to Petersburg and Seattle, with weekend exceptions. Alaska Coastal routes to Ketchikan three daily departures vary by Saturday times. Northbound departures from Petersburg to Seattle run through Petersburg, with June 15 changes and Sitka connections listed.
Mel Housley head of Petersburg High School math department was named superintendent of Petersburg schools replacing J F Hayward who moved to Ketchikan. The board screened two dozen applicants, interviewed three men, and chose Housley who will train on a one year basis while continuing to teach math. He has prior superintendent experience and nine years in Petersburg.
Five Japanese high seas salmon catcher boats were detected Thursday in waters closed by the International North Pacific Fisheries Treaty. A Coast Guard plane reported them. the cutter Wachusett was ordered to intercept. Two catcher boats were seen 60 miles south of Aktu Island, and three 30 miles south of Amila Island, well inside the line.
Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a 12 30 a m alarm at the Annie Cooday residence where an overheated stove pipe scorched the wall.
