Voters favored a 335000 joint city school bond for a 42 by 75 foot indoor swimming pool adjacent to the elementary school. The project will be financed by 200000 city bonds, 104320 state school funds, 25000 tobacco tax surplus and about 16000 from a civic pool fund with state aid easing city costs.
Fred Pennington, a refrigeration worker from Seattle, was burned by ammonia in an accident at Petersburg Cold Storage on Tuesday. He was admitted to Petersburg General Hospital in non serious condition after emergency treatment. Officials say he was repairing an icemaking machine when a valve was loosened and ammonia released, leading to facial burns.
Three tires on a twin engine Grumman Super Widgeon at Petersburg Airport were slashed. Viking Airways offers 200 reward for information on the suspect Hepernon. Aircraft faces 500 tire replacement cost and thorough inspection. Police call the act a serious felony in Alaska.
Lloyd Theodore Swanson age 66 longtime Petersburg resident and former city council member died Monday night aboard a state ferry returning from Seward where he had been working for Petersburg Fisheries Inc. He was born February 28 1904 in Minneapolis Minnesota came to Petersburg in 1929 and had lived in Everett Washington before moving here. He had varied business roles including a telephone firm electric work cannery and apartment ownership and was active in civic life belonging to the Lutheran Church Rotary Club and the Magons. He married Lillian Holm on February 17 1926 and she survives with his brother Chester of Bremerton Washington and two sons Lewellyn of Petersburg and Norris of Petersburg.
Police Chief Richard Shaffer announced the firing of two Petersburg officers. Martin Johnson of Larar mie Wyoming was dismissed for leaving a jail cell unlocked, and Patrolman Tom Fuller formerly of Sitka was fired for dereliction of duty.
Anna Marie Theodorson 82 mother of Mrs. Margit Smith dies at hospital after living in Petersburg ten months and formerly of Stanwood Washington. Services at 10 a.m. at eran Church with Rev. Paul Jordan officiating. Survived by daughter here and another in Ketchikan plus six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Born Trondheim Norway January 5 1888. Buried at Evergreen Memorial Park Seattle.
