The House approved the omnibus river and harbor bill on May 18, funding Wrangell Narrows, Metlakatla Harbor, and Meyers Chuck Harbor with specified costs. Muskeg May Prove Source of Peat in Alaska

Sitka air base work begins in July if schedules hold. Kodiak dredging and filling to allow early next year building starts. Navy appropriation bill totals 773 million for fiscal year starting July 1 1939 funding two battleships 500 planes fleet expansion and shore facilities. London officials gave up hope for 24 year old Thomas H. Smith missing after he departed Old Orchard Beach Maine on a trans Atlantic hop in a small plane. With about 42 hours of fuel he disappeared 41 hours after takeoff. he is the second man to vanish in two weeks on a similar attempt following Charles Backman from Newfoundland to Sweden.
