Decoration Day tradition described as American and growing into parklike cemeteries. Veterans organizations place flags on graves while families visit, tending flowers and wreaths as an annual pilgrimage that honors loved ones, near and far.
Kathleen Jan Knight and Neal James MacDonald united in marriage at the Salvation Army chapel. Kathleen is daughter of Mrs Martha S Knight and Neal is son of Mrs Georgia MacDonald. A reception followed at the Sons of Norway hall. Full wedding details to appear next week.
Local and territorial Boy Scout leaders announce the 4th Annual Explorer Encampment at Kodiak Naval Operating Base June 24 to 30 for ages 14 to 17 with parent and scoutmaster approval. Air Force transport from Annette and Juneau. possible McKinley Trek extension. other camps include Eagle River May 37 to June 22 and White River July 9 to 2.
Petersburg moves toward a National Guard unit with three officers en route to organize a rifle platoon of Company C 208th Infantry Battalion. A color film at 7 PM at the Elks Club will outline plans and discuss eligibility 17 to 35, with prior service overage allowed.
An early morning aerial joyride near Valdez killed two men including Stanley Knuteson a 25 year old war veteran. Owner Joe Dieringer said he did not know his plane was missing until informed of the crash. A boy named Jackie Hobson found the wreckage and Knuteson leaves a wife Enola and four children.
Jay Braun and his wife Mrs J J Braun of Petersburg Bakery visited their former home in Juneau during a vacation, sharing time with family and reflecting on past years. Their young son joined the trip, highlighting a family reunion aspect of the journey.
The Oregon Journal tour party includes 250 vacationists from Portland and nearby states aboard the SS Prince George on an 11 day charter cruise. Petersburg is new on the itinerary with calls at Ocean Falls, Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Wrangell and Victoria. Junior Chamber of Commerce members greet visitors and show town highlights including speed boat races shrimp samples and cannery tours.
Frances Nore presided as senior regent as three new Women of the Moose members were initiated. Caroline Westerberg Viola Reynolds and Nettie Burgess joined the chapter. A brief business meeting followed with officer nominations before Loyal Order of Moose members joined for games and prizes. Next meeting June 11 will elect officers.
Seattle report notes Mildred Hermann of Juneau honored by the National Federation of Press Women. Her story for the Alaska Sunday Press was rated the second best news story in a weekly paper category. Hermann is a Juneau attorney.
A large group of anglers traveled to Petersburg Lake for the Memorial Day holiday. They departed Tuesday noon and returned late Wednesday, flown by Karl Omdahl of Alaska Island Airlines. Participants included Dr. W. W. Bailey, Jay Luker, Bue Hentze, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Westre, the Elder Lees, and Mrs. Gordon Jensen. Fishing was only fairly good.
Town records show over two hundred visitors this morning as Petersburg enjoyed warm sunny weather. The CAA weather station logged a high of 66 and a low of 32 for the week with scanty precipitation of 0.21 inches. Provisional figures compare to 1950 when highs reached 60 and lows 37 around late May with 1.13 inches of rain.
Petersburg Girl Scouts announce a bake and food sale at the library on Saturday afternoon June 2 at 2 oclock to raise funds for uniforms. Led by Rose Mary Phillips and Eunice Su sort the group has earned a substantial sum through their own efforts.
The Civil Aeronautics Board granted Ellis Air Lines authority to begin regular passenger and cargo service linking Ketchikan Alaska with Prince Rupert British Columbia. The carrier is described as a Southeastern Alaska service.
Petersburg opens a new weekly event called Chicken Dinner Out run in cooperation with Twin Creek Poultry Farm. Hosts Charlotte and Darlene serve fried chicken with potato salad and homemade bread every Sunday in summer from 2 to 8 pm, rain or shine. Reservations encouraged.
Mary Robinson of the extension service is back in Petersburg after months in the Interior. She conducted upholstery and home arts classes in leading towns and now has pamphlets on Home gardening in Alaska. Interested residents may drop a card at the post office or see her in person.
Mrs. Jeanette Phillips travels to Juneau after being notified of her sister's death. The brief notice records the travel and family mourning as the primary events.
Miriam MacKechnie was named treasurer of the Alaska federation of Business and Professional Women's clubs at a Baranof hotel convention. Delegates from Petersburg attended. Miss Swenson carried MacKechnie’s proxies and both Norma Tenfford and Roxanne Swenson served on committees.
Petersburg youths Bruce Jones and Ruth Duval are chosen as Petersburg official delegates for the international Luther League convention in Seattle in June 2024 at the Civic Auditorium. Arlene Arness plans to attend if possible. Ruth and Arlene depart with the Octor Arness family, while Bruce travels with Pastor Hopp’s family.
The American Legion Auxiliary urges Petersburg to make the city a flag city on Flag Day June 14. The observance marks the 174th anniversary of the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the U S flag.
Mr and Mrs Art Hedges traveled to Seattle this week, flying out Tuesday for an unspecified visit or engagement in the city.
Members of the Chamber of Commerce postponed a fishing derby challenge after deciding to obtain a certified list of Jaycee contestants. They fear an uncertain field and plan to enter a king salmon derby scheduled for Sunday June 10 from sunrise to 9 p.m. Prior derbies favored the Senior Chamber trophy pot. The Senior Chamber may provide a winning entry but keeps the name private until the fish is turned in.
The city diesel plant has shouldered the electric load for Peters burg this week after a slide at Blind Slough buckled a wood pipe top of hill. Water spills damaged the penstock area with an iron pipe shifted ten feet and debris piled high. repairs could take at least two weeks. Don MacKechnie seeks workers to restore the Blind Slough plant load and asks interested locals to contact the city light plant.
After years peering into steam fireboxes, the PAF introduces a 76 by 24 by 514 foot rigging scow built in Seattle. It features a gas engine replacing steam, a five drum winch, new cables, galley and stainless steel fittings, and crew quarters with beds showers and lockers. Grebstad praises the crew for securing fuel for steady steam supply.
The junior choir of the Luthe ran church will give its final season appearance Sunday at 7 30 pm. Children have practiced after school Wednesdays since September and sang two numbers at morning services on the second and fourth Sundays each month. They have also performed for specials and three concerts with the senior choir. Everyone is invited to attend this informal program and stay for refreshments provided by choir mothers.
National Editorial Association plans next week in Petersburg with a seafood dinner at the high school gymnasium. A long list of attendees from across the United States includes editors and their spouses, with Miss Lillian Swanson coordinating arrangements.
