Random Thoughts from HERE AND THERE calls Petersburg residents to vote next Tuesday on a hospital bond not to exceed 27500 dollars, with Territory matching funds and immediate construction upon approval. Also warns that illegal 22 pistol fire near the Duval home prompted police chief Dalen to promise punishment for indoor city limit shootings.
Manila reports Japanese forces attempted counterattacks against Filipino guerrillas and American infantry on Luzon and Mindanao and against Australians on New Guinea. A headquarters spokesman called the actions almost uniformly unsuccessful though on small scales. Ferocious Luzon guerrillas repulsed several hundred troops attempting to cross the Cagayan river by raft and maintain control of the valley ahead of American patrols.
Delegate Bartlett of Alaska and eight House Military Affairs Committee members will depart Washington for Europe and the Middle East to inspect the Army surplus property disposal program and troop deployment operations.
Wildlife agent Hosea Sarber urges spring travelers not to disturb fawns found by the roadside. Mothers often hide nearby and will care for their young once humans retreat. Do not remove fawns unless the doe is obviously dead or missing.
Approval has been granted for ten private new construction priorities in Petersburg under the H-2 housing program. George W. Coplen of the National Housing Agency Seattle says the plan aims to ease wartime congestion by permitting larger, higher quality homes with prices up to 8000 and shelter rents to 65. FHA mortgage insurance may apply, with three bedroom houses now feasible. Applicants file through Folger Johnson, FHA Portland. WPB and Norman Stines in Juneau assist.
Earl Ohmer, president of the Chamber of Commerce, reports Governor Gruening has granted a two month extension of the Jones Act waiver to July 31 for merchandise and tender service between Southeastern Alaska ports south of Yakutat and British Columbia. Efforts continue to extend the waiver to the end of the fishing season.
Memorial Day was observed quietly in Petersburg with Post of the American Legion placing flags on war veterans' graves in the local cemetery. Services were held at the Presbyterian church with Rev. George Betts presiding. Businesses closed for the day as residents enjoyed good weather at beaches or fishing.
Mrs. Conner Kinnear and Carol departed Thursday by plane for Ket chikan and planned to travel to Seattle to meet Conner who is set for a ten day furlough from Camp Shelby Mississippi where he has been stationed.
