Budget forecast nudges Alaska toward $100 million mark
Governor Walter Hickel indicated the Alaska general fund could exceed $100 million for the first time next year with departmental requests running up to 40 percent above the current year. He aims to cap appropriations near $108 million and plans a budget message after the January session. The gross business license tax is slated for abolition, with last year’s yield over $3 million.

Christmas Decoration Winners Dominant In Petersburg Contest
Rose Menish and the Star won first in home and business categories at the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce decorated display contest. Roy Lund and Howard Conn earned second and third in the home division. J and H Logging and ATN placed in the business division. One organizational division entry was not submitted. The Rev. David Crawford chaired the planning committee. In other news, William Carl Smith, 37, of Petersburg died while helping build a trailer home at Barbette after living in Port Alexander. He leaves Lilly and daughter Carlene, plus a stepdaughter, and relatives in several states. Burial was at Petersburg Cemetery.

Classes on the Baha i Faith are led by delegates from Sitka Ketchikan Juneau Haines Whitehorse and California with a 8 p.m. slide show by Tom and Georgia Haisler from Juneau Saturday and a 3 p.m. Sunday public meeting with Ted Anderson on Religion for the Space Age. Anderson, a Western Hemisphere Auxiliary Board member, has traveled widely in the U S and Canada. Attendance welcomed for any parts of the program.

Fire destroys house in West Petersburg
A West Petersburg house owned by Erwin Brown was completely destroyed by fire last Friday afternoon. No occupants were present. The Coast Guard vessel Elderberry responded but low tide and limited water prevented extinguishing efforts. crews could only stop the blaze from spreading.

Insurance Rates Rise on Alaskan Autos Next Year
Alaska motorists face higher auto liability limits under the Alaska Financial Responsibility Law. The Legislature raised minimum limits to 15 000/30 000/5 000, effective January 1 1967, up from 10 000/20 000/5 000. Existing higher-coverage policies unaffected. The NBCU rate change plus higher basic limits add 7 to 13 dollars annually, varying by location.

Fire guts interior of Neal MacDonalds boat Little Lady
Over the weekend a blaze gutted the boat interior of Neal MacDonalds Little Lady. The fire leaked 1500 gallons of oil into the bilge and ignited, but closed portholes and doors kept it from spreading. MacDonald says insurance covers the loss.

Alaska Ferry Crew Win Five Percent Pay Increase
The Alaska state ferry crew will receive a five percent wage raise under a new contract with the Ireland Boatmen's Union of the Pacific. The agreement covers about 200 crewmen and becomes effective July 1.
