Big Catches of Herring Made Off Oregon Coast

Portland merchants report strong herring catches by Alaska vessels Edgar C. and Laurenz off the Oregon coast. F H Reese of the Portland Chamber of Commerce praises captains and crews for $5,000 hauls despite operating independently. He notes Alaska fishermen wintering in Seattle and confirms herring abundance in fall and winter with plants paying about $10 per ton in Oregon waters.

Petersburg Residents Offered Alaskan Mayfield Mines Stock

Emil Helekal president of Alaskan Mayfield Mines announces a stock offering to Petersburg residents at 50 cents a share. The firm is authorized to issue 287055 shares at 1.00 and seeks public ownership to qualify for exchange listing. Helekal remains in Petersburg through early next week before returning to Valdez.

The Sons of Norway announce their annual New Year’s Eve Ball at the Sons of Norway Hall next Tuesday New Year’s Eve. An orchestra will provide music for a festive ushering in of the New Year and dancing across the evening.

Town of Petersburg Seeks Subscriptions for 4 Percent Bonds

Subscriptions for the purchase of Town of Petersburg General Obligation bonds bearing 4 percent interest will be received by the City Treasurer at the Bank of Petersburg office until January 15, 1936.

Fur Industry Active in Petersburg Alaska

Southeastern Alaska fur trade bustle as Petersburg reports brisk pelting of ranched mink wild mink and foxes. Ranched mink sales reach about twenty thousand dollars with blue fox sales matching that sum. Ben Mazer and Lan Ketcham linked to Olaf Swenson bought around 1000 blue fox pelts and 700 mink before Christmas. Prices for ranched mink and foxes remain strong.

Town Team Rallies to Defeat H S High School Varsity

Petersburg Town Team avenged an earlier loss by beating the High School varsity 25 to 19 in overtime at the school gym. HS led 14 2 at halftime but town rallied with long shots in the fourth quarter to tie 17 all, then held the HS to one field goal in overtime. Rolf Wiprud and Leo Ness led the town with eight points each.

Gay Christmas: 1's Celebrated

After rain the headline notes a clear colder Monday followed by snowfall on Tuesday for the Xmas Eye and Xmas Day festivities. Groups visited, the postal service reported activity, and Postmaster Brennan with assistant Helen Lang were busy distributing local greeting cards and Tuesday’s mail.

Seven Turkeys Won at Rifle Shoot at Citizens Dock

At the Rifle Club turkey shoot last Sunday at the Citizens Dock seven members won turkeys. Contestants shot an inch target at fifty feet and several ties required shoot offs. Winners were Kenneth Welde, J L MacKechnie, Raymond Swanson, Donald MacKechnie, Hugh Jones, Henry Gardner and Chet Steear.

Alaska Game Commission Ends Twelve Day Session

The eleventh regular session of the Alaska Game Commission adjourned after twelve days. Irving McK Reed of Fairbanks becomes chair with Earl N. Ohmer of Petersburg as his successor. The panel approved changes in game and furbearer regulations to take effect July 1, 1936 and outlined migratory bird zone recommendations. They urged better regulation for the 1936 duck season and requested predator control funds from federal authorities.
