The first games of the season feature 1st High School versus 1st Town Team and 2nd High School versus 2nd Town Team. The double header is scheduled for Saturday evening January 3 at the Sons of Norway Hall. Petersburg teams look to start strong with local support and past success guiding expectations.
On Sunday the Motorship Northland docked at Public Dock drawing children from across town. Captain Williams welcomed them aboard the Social Hall hosted Santa Claus who gave each child apples and oranges and a chance to share Christmas wishes. About 270 kids boarded.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts the second card party in the Legion Dugout on January 3. Prizes awarded at each event with grand prizes for top scores across three parties. Hostesses are Mrs Edward Loken, Mrs C M Archbold and Mrs Charles Anderson. Cake sandwiches and coffee served. The 22m ton price will be fifty cents.
North land Transportation Motorship Norco sailed from Seattle to Southeast Alaska at nine last night with two passengers for Ketchikan and one for Juneau. No passengers listed for Petersburg. Pacific Steamship Co. liner Queen Seattle departed at ten this morning for Southeastern Alaska with sixteen passengers including two for Ketchikan and one for Wrangell. No passengers listed for Petersburg.
After two profitable showings the Beauty Shop play raised about 100 dollars for the PTA Gymnasium Fund. Royalty totals reached 60 dollars, paid by Mr. Louis with a receipt to C. E. Swanson, chairman of BPO Ellis. Ticket and street sales added 100 dollars. The cast praised the experience and would gladly perform again. The Ellis BPO and PTA thank director Mr. Lewis and all participants.
Petersburg natives present a single evening event at the MacGregor Theater featuring Alaska Native Siterwood and Brotherhood in a complete Indian costume show with dances comedy and drama. Proceeds aid native children housed in nearby districts.
Chester Indiana police halted a man who had wandered hours with a radium needle valued at $5,000 embedded in his nose. No injuries were reported and medical officials inspected the object. The man gave no clear explanation for the needle’s presence and was taken for further evaluation.
The Navy Department reports 100 to 200 graduates of the Naval Academy class of 1931 will be forced to leave the Navy career after graduation in June.
Rev. A. Judson Hughes aged 75 collapses and dies of a heart attack while visiting his wife's grave in Philadelphia before departing for California.
A Petersburg Vessel Owners Protective Fund Association meeting is set for Sunday at 11 oclock in the Trading Union store. The group will discuss a large amount of business and all members are urged to attend.
The Commercial Club postpones the weekly meeting due to the busy season and New Year’s Eve. The first meeting of 1931 will be Wednesday, January 7, at 6 pm, with a dinner at the Grand Cafe and all members urged to attend.
In Princeton Kentucky following the death of Given Oliver aged 24 in a hunting accident one of the dogs howled to rouse his wife. She tracked the sound into the woods and found the other dog guarding Oliver's body.
A revised map by highway study commissioners updates the route from Fairbanks to Dawson and onward toward Atlin with an altered Stikine River alignment into Wrangell. The commission includes Herbert H. Rice Malcolm Elliot and Ernest Walker Sawyer. The planned road network connects Alaska routes to British Columbia and Vancouver, with probable cross routes toward Juneau and connections through Telegra Creek and Hazelton.
At midnight on Christmas Eve a fire started in Campbell's Store display window from decorative globes. The dry Christmas tree ignited, but quick action by Mrs Campbell and the Petersburgh Fire Department limited damage to the window area and nearby stock. The wrong size globes caused excessive heat, blowing glass and scorching the ceiling while fuses prevented water damage to merchandise.
Students across all grades held Christmas programs with decorated trees and gift exchanges so every child gave or received a present. The High School event followed the same gift swap, plus a Christmas story read by the Bunyan church group, a saxophone solo by Frank Gordon, and a girl quartet singing carols under Miss toe personal direction.
Nearly 400 bags of candy were handed out as Petersburg staged its first Community Christmas Tree afternoon program. Children lined up at City Hall and a lighted tree, arranged by Loyd T. Swanson, drew crowds while Mayor Earl Onmer welcomed attendees. Santa spoke from the bandstand and distributed gifts as the crowd, stewarded by the public school staff, lingered for the ongoing holiday display.
Anderson Bros. begin construction of a marine ways facility near the old Petersburg saw mill. The shed will be 32 feet by 85 feet with a 50 foot height, cradle 30 by 80 feet, and a sheet metal roof. The project, bought from the Bank of Petersburg, aims to be ready by February 1.
An ice raft aided a hunter stranded near OW Alaska after a polar bear hunt left him marooned on a small island. He used improvised paddling as he improvised shelter and signaling. The incident underscores perilous Arctic travel and survival skills.

Dr Loftus territorial veterinarian spent nearly a month inspecting Point Agassiz cattle and local dairies finding milk and bottling methods satisfactory. Tuberculosis tests showed no germ in district milk while diseased cattle in other areas were culled. A government film program on fox raising and disease tests followed a Petersburg showing, with Loftus planning further educational films for fur raising industries.
ITI reports BAUXITE Arkansas where 1500 residents lack a local store and bank after a fire destroys the village store and the bank remains shut.
London reports eighty thousand Poles or about twenty percent of the population are diagnosed with influenza.
On January 1 the mercantile house J. R. Heckman & Co. of Ketchikan Alaska will retire from active business. Glenn Carrington and associates will take over the hardware and furniture department and Tongass Trading Co. will acquire the grocery stock and goodwill. The men’s furnishings and dry goods remain with Heckman for now.
