Stevens chosen to fill Bartlett seat in Alaska
Governor Hickel named Ted Stevens 45 year old Anchorage lawyer to succeed the late E L Bartlett. Stevens will serve two years until a special election fills Bartlett term. Hickel narrowed list from 10 to Stevens and State Sen Carl Brady both of Anchorage.

The Angoon fishing vessel Lauriana sits on a rock pinnacle at McNamara Reef waiting for a high January tide to free her while the Coast Guard Cutter Elderberry, under Chief Boatswain's Mate George Springer, saved all six crew including skipper Kenny Kirkman. The ship rode 50 to 65 knot winds as crews attempted a line-in amid rough seas.

Petersburg Elementary School to be ready by mid January
City inspector Jim Martinsen said the Petersburg Elementary School will be ready for occupancy about mid January after a delay in window glass. The next Chamber of Commerce meeting is January 6 and recent meetings were canceled for holidays announced secretary Bernice Stokke. 24 Poor Families To Have Yule Dinner
Lt Nick Garner of the Salvation Army said he delivered complete Christmas dinner makings to 24 needy families in Pittsburgh on Monday. Each turkey accompanied canned goods donated by schoolchildren and funded by direct gifts and kettle collections at the post office.
