The 1954 edition notes a front page photo for Petersburg was misplaced and the paper goes to print a day early. Editors explain the twofold reason for the date shift: offering advertisers a last chance and allowing the Clemons family to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day without strain.
A lifelike Nativity Scene is shown in the Trading Union showcase with lifesize figures and a straw floor layer enhancing realism. The display is praised as one of the most realistic in this period.
The Moose coached by Tom Wanberg edged Wrangell 50 47 in a tense season opener Friday as the Moose pulled away late in the third. Saturday the Elks beat Wrangell 73 53 with familiar players Swanson Thompson Orness and Norheim shining. Next week Moose face Vikings then Elks in back to back games amid strong local support.
The Sons and Daughters of Norway will hold a Christmas party at the S of N hall on December 30. Children will be served at 3 00 p.m. and the adults at 8 30 p.m. No New Year Eve dance will be held this year at the hall. Myr and Mrs Haakon Thomassen.
The scene from the Lutheran Church is on loan to the store for Sunday evening use during the Sunday School program.

Rumors say 1956 will bring beach landing mats to unload planes directly.
U S Marshal C A Wilder stated in a press call that a Deputy Marshal will be stationed here as soon as possible after efforts to secure a permanent post were completed.
The U S FWS announced that 1955 boat registration plates will be available at the office of US Commissioner Dale Hirt after January 1. Commissioner Hirt will handle the plates again this year as he did for the past two years. Fishermen must display plates, no charge, and provide boat name or number, official registration and net tonnage when applying. The plates differ from the territorial commercial fishing license required for commercial fishermen.
Kenny Thynes Iver and Jer ry Hestad David Wikan Jim Rhodes and Jonas Hallingstad all serving in Anchorage with the Armed Forces arrived Monday to spend the holidays with their families. Roy Torwick arrived Tuesday, completing the Torwick family circle. Carolyn Winslow Frank Lar ber and Bobby Nelson all college students arrived Monday. Most arrived a day late due to travel delays with stops in Ketchikan and Juneau.
Mayor Ernie Hauger reports on the Southeast Alaska Mayor’s conference in Ketchikan. The council discussed sending a representative to the League of Alaskan Cities convention, financing plans, a 2000 EVA transformer purchase, water rate investigation, truck bid vetting, and parking signs for the airplane float area.
The Nativity presented at the High School auditorium featured the chorus directed by Walt Birkeland with Serena Hopp at piano. Grade School children portrayed main characters as scaled tableaux appeared on a dim stage, drawing laughs from makeup.
Heavy gusts reached 70 mph after 11:10 pm Sunday and 55 mph after 5:00 am Monday, damaging roofs at Modern Grocery Hammer Wikans and Pastime Cafe. A lathe shed at Arness Mill collapsed, with owner Octor Arness saying repairs will take about two weeks. Bud Olsons warehouse near Mitkof Highway also collapsed. By 10 am Monday winds subsided and air traffic returned to schedule.
The Galette Fest at the Lutheran Church will take place Wednesday evening December 29 at 7:30. There will be tree singing in English and Norwegian for all ages. Kalla Skronseth and Esther Osen plan to assist with the event and a church ladies group will provide food. Norwegian costumes welcome.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce in Pas, joined by other communities, protested the CAB decision to cancel Pacific Northern Airlines Alaska to the States route. The group telegrammed the CAB and sent a copy to Governor Heintzleman. Ralph Young showed wildlife footage from Admiralty Island including brown bears.
Miss Lindenmeyer’s fifth grade class visited the Hospital on Tuesday morning to present their gift to the Hospital building fund. They sang Christmas carols to patients and expressed thanks to Mrs Johanna Barn reiter, the superintendent, for the support.
A painting of Petersburg by artist Miss Kalla Skrovseth was presented to the hospital by Knut Thompson on behalf of himself and Ed Locken. The artwork now hangs on the hospital wall for public viewing when the lights are on.
Nine hundred residents of Ekalaka Montana hunt fossils as a community hobby led by Marshall Lambert a high school science teacher and University of Alaska graduate The November 8 LIFE magazine features three pages of fossil hunter photos in their town museum set up in the high school basement Lambert born in Baker Montana.
Santa Claus told a Petersburg gathering at the Sons of Norway Hall that the weather felt almost too warm for him during his annual visit for members of the American Legion and Auxiliary. A buffet pot-luck preceded the gift distribution, and Santa remarked he found more children awaiting him than at other parties this year.
A W Woodley of Pacific Northern Airlines claims the Civil Aeronautics Board has decided to terminate the States Alaska service. PNA seeks support from officials in Washington and Olympia as Governor Langlie refers the issue to the Public Service Commission for study. In a separate note, Interior Secretary McKay announces public entry opening of 6400 acres near Fairbanks with 4000 acres designated for residential and various sites.
Norma Tenfjord has been chosen as second vice-president of the Alaska state Business and Professional Women the Alaska BPW president reports.
Dr. R. C. Smith's office will close at 3 00 p.m. Friday December 24. If unable to reach the Doctor at his office or home call the Hospital.
A note to liquor store operators states deliveries cannot be made unless the consumer is on the premises at pickup time. The message emphasizes in person presence for delivery service.
