Notice to patrons announces The Petersburg Press will publish every Wednesday starting Jan 3. The change extends advertiser specials and speeds weekend and Monday news coverage including City Council and Chamber of Commerce meetings. Display and news deadlines will be moved earlier.
City Council unanimously approved working drawings for a new elementary school and near term bid by March 15. The action followed a school board approval and joint session explanations by architect Lynn Forrest of Juneau. Rock quarry production last season reached 7 384 cubic yards at 4 20 per yard. Petersburg teachers push for salary raises with analysis showing salaries at bottom of Alaska scale. Weather Bureau forecasts 80 percent precipitation today and 40 percent tonight with a high of 40 and a low of five.
City officials were told by H and H Construction about a nine building two story complex on half a block near medium priced housing. Each building would have four two bedroom units and two one bedroom suites with street sewer and water lines laid at the builders expense. Construction could start soon to address tight housing.
Marvin Mickalsen a crewman on the Peters burg Fisheries Howkan was injured when he fell from his bunk at King Cove dislocating his shoulder. He spent seven days at the Alaska Native Hospital Anchorage and returned home on Wednesday.
