Santa makes his official season debut in Petersburg December 2 at the Trading Union clothing department. About 195 youngsters spoke with Santa this first trip, a third consecutive year of Santa’s first appearance in town, assisted this year by city manager K L Dotts and aided previously by Tom Thompson and Bill Greinier Sr.
For 30 years Kuhn has played Santa in Glasgow Missouri dancing with the town’s Christmas spirit. At 6 foot 8 and 300 pounds with a real beard he visits nearby communities delivering candy toys via sleigh or wheels if no snow. He answers 200 to 300 letters from children each year and coordinates with civic groups to supply gifts.
Santa Claus has changed from the slender European Saint Nicholas to the well fed merry figure with rosy cheeks and sleigh. Washington Irving described a jolly haired Nick in 1809 and 1823 solidified features. Thomas Nast in 1869 popularized the red garb and pipe. Modern travel makes anonymity difficult.
