The high school chorus performs its annual Christmas program at 8 p.m. featuring a Fred Waring arrangement of The Night Before Christmas and carols. An eight grade and two preschool helpers join in a short play, with Kenny Burton as announcer. Admission is free with a voluntary offering for chorus transport to the Juneau music festival.
The fur bearing animal trapping season for mink marten and otter begins in Southeastern Alaska and runs until January 20 with no bag limits on three species. Chigakof Island is closed to marten trapping and Juneau Reserve blocks all three species. Fur prices range around 22 to 25 dollars for mink and otter and 7 to 15 dollars for marten. The Fish and Wildlife Service prohibits shotguns set guns and artificial lights for trapping these animals.

The Moose and Women of the Moose teen age committee announces two semi formal dances during the holidays at Moose Hall. December 26 is for Juniors from grades five to seven from 7 to 10 pm and December 28 for Seniors from 8 to 11 pm. Senior juniors excluded. A letter to legislators seeks action on teacher pay and education funding.
The American Legion Auxiliary and members plus families enjoyed a Christmas Potluck and party Monday at the Sons of Norway Hall. President Mrs. Caspernestre thanked committees. decorations by Mrs. Hofstad with help from Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Anderson, and Mrs. Hirt. Kitchen chair Mrs. Thompson aided by several members. Wikan led a reading, group singing with Alice Coffin at the piano. Gifts organized by Mrs. Reids and Mrs. Longworth were distributed by Santa with Dick Gribble assisting.
A free children’s movie presented by the Elks lodge and Coliseum Theatre is planned for tomorrow at 1 p.m. An Emblem Club potluck for Elks members and families follows at the Elks hall starting 5:30 p.m. Santa Claus will arrive at 7 p.m.
President Eisenhower accepted the resignation of Gov. B. Frank Heintzleman effective January 3. Heintzleman cited 46 years of public service and retirement from strenuous work. He urged the successor be ready by the January 28 legislative session and noted his work on Alaska natural resources and a pulp industry. Numerous names circulate for the next Alaska governor.
Local residents depart for Seattle Juneau Wrangell Ketchikan and other U S locations for holidays and to rejoin families. Many travelers plan to return after the season as Empire Construction Co resumes work and residents prepare for the upcoming project timeline.
Mr and Mrs William Brown of Nome arrived Friday. He will serve as the corps of engineers inspector for the harbor dredging project while Cliff Fenn is on vacation. The Browns have 23 years in Nome and will travel to the states after dredging ends, then return home.
The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce received a 134 check from the William Daniel Gross Memorial Fund to aid needy work in the community. W D Gross of Coliseum Theatres Alaska made the grant honoring his deceased son Harold Moats. Moats, with U S Army Corps of Engineers Anchorage, and Wm Brown, local dredging inspector, attended the last chamber meeting. The corps plans ongoing harbor project reviews next year. The chamber will next meet January 7, 1957 at Winnies.
The doctor’s office will be closed all day Tuesday. Patients are advised to reschedule appointments and call for urgent care options if needed. Local clinic staff will return Wednesday with normal hours.
In the fourth century December 25 was set as Christ’s birth day by the church while some Eastern branches still celebrate January 6 as the great day. The two dates reflect long standing traditions across Christian communities.
Susitna reports 75 tons this week while the Tanana is due Monday. Cold storage flooring is finished and double decking goes in hallways. Thompson ships 65,000 units Saturday. Dredge crews depart December 23 for Wrangell, return after Christmas, aiming to finish early next year. Townspeople will tour the dredge by arrangement with Captain Art Molver.
Members of the hospital staff and Hospital Guild along with wives of Hospital Board members and Dr. and Mrs. Smith attended a Christmas party in the Hospital Guild room on December 19. Coffee and cookies, fruit cake and other foods were served and a gift exchange took place. Nurses Dorothy Blair and Ollie Karkick received special awards for outstanding duty performed.
The Petersburg Town Council canceled the next regular meeting set for Christmas Eve. A special meeting on New Year’s Eve is planned, with possible postponement or cancellation to be announced next week. The prior meeting included a bill payment and a U S Marshal request for fingerprinting cab drivers Alaska-wide. The mayor will seek more details before action. A harbor discussion covered boat houses at the harbor project approach and harbormaster issues, with a committee to meet vessel owners for a plan.
Gov. Heintzleman said he would be delighted to serve and would immediately accept a position on the Alaska International Rail and Highway Commission. He noted he has not been asked to serve or chair the 12 member body and questioned if his resignation accepts signals availability.
The health center will be closed from Monday December 24 through Friday January 7. Normal operations resume on the following business day as staff return.

The community chorus presents its annual carol program Saturday night at 8. Walter Birkeland directs the choruses. After the hospital program, the chorus will distribute carols to known shut ins throughout the community.
Collier's and the Woman's Home Companion will suspend publication next month after decades in circulation. A company official cited rising costs and shrinking advertising revenue despite large readership as the reason for ending the magazines.
Lonnie Heiner son of Mr and Mrs Larry Heiner expected here Saturday to spend the holiday vacation. He is at tending the University of Alaska where he has just made the honor roll for the second six weeks period. Irving Igtanloc Jr from Oregon State College returns home. Bruce Jones will spend Christmas in Carmel California and attend the Rose Bowl game January 1. Gary Jones visits Seattle. Bill Young from Oregon State expected here for vacation. John and Lois Johnson plan to stay at U of Alaska. John may visit Anchorage after Christmas. Ted Smith and Elias Reyes Jr arrived to spend the holidays from Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham. Smith in second year. Reyes son of Mr and Mrs Elias Reyes.
Hospital Guild meets on the second Friday at 2 p.m. Immunization clinic runs Thursdays 2 00 to 4 15. PTA meets second Wednesday each month. Emblem Club Christmas Tea on December 30 from 2 to 5 p.m. New Year’s Eve Dance on December 31 at the Sons of Norway Hall. High School chorus Christmas Concert December 21 at 8 p.m. Sons and Daughters of Norway Christmas Party potluck December 27 at 6 p.m. Presbyterian Sunday School program December 23 at 7 30 p.m. Only two shopping days left until Christmas.
Stores in Petersburg will open Monday for Christmas Eve shopping but most close New Year's Eve. Shoppers should note a three day holding over New Years.
